Guidelines to Goal Setting For Professional Employees

Prior to developing goals, the supervisor and staff member should determine and clarify the goals of IU Northwest. Particular attention should be given to the Shared Vision and the Student Centered Principles, as goals need to be supportive of both of these area.

  • Goals should be based on your responsibilities and duties. That's why dialogue between the employee and the staff member on major duties is so critical.

LOOK FOR GOAL OPPORTUNITIES

What can you do to contribute to the Shared Vision and Student Centered Principles? Examine results from the past weeks, months and years for opportunities.

  • What problems, if any, have the people you served had with the organization or with your unit.
  • What can you do to reduce costs or improve your efficiency without decreasing customer service?
  • What can you do to improve quality and customer service?
  • What are your personal strengths? What areas need improvement?
    • How can you use your strengths to contribute more?
    • What can you do to work on your skills needing improvement?
    • What should you do so you can handle new responsibilities well?
IDENTIFY YOUR KEY SUCCESS FACTORS

Having concrete success factors will help you answer these critical questions:

  • How do I know if I am being successful?
  • How do I know if I am getting off course?
  • If off course, what corrective actions should I take?

In developing your key success factors, first decide which areas define success for you.
For example:

  • Customer satisfaction
  • Student recruitment
  • Student retention
  • Improved work efficiency
  • Financial results
