IU Northwest General Education Principle 4

Principle 4	Definition
4. Diversity	Valuing the diversity of human experience, as exemplified in race, ethnicity, social class, language, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, or disabilities; understanding how these categories are often used to create injustice; recognizing our common human heritage and the interconnectedness of communities in the region, the nation, and the world.

Some of the Principle 2 courses and advanced/writing-intensive courses from Principle 1 should be designated as diversity courses. COAS courses that meet Principle 4 requirements can be found here.

Learning Outcomes - Adopted 10/17/2008

IU Northwest graduates will:

Demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity in a variety of contexts.
Demonstrate understanding of the relationships between social structures, social justice, and human rights.
Demonstrate understanding of racial minority experiences and diverse worldviews and the manner in which they shape U.S. culture and the world.

Units must specify how their students will meet the outcomes for principle 4. Each unit will provide evidence that students have met the appropriate outcomes. Units are responsible for creating or designating the necessary courses and/or enriching experiences that fulfill the requirement and for assessing the outcomes.

Guidelines: Outcomes for principle 4 will be met by a class or by an enriching educational experience such as service learning, an internship, a capstone project, student teaching, an independent study research/creative activity, study abroad, a show, or a performance.
