I. Why is this certificate needed? (Rationale)
This proposal extends the educational opportunities that are the long standing commitment of the Department of Minority Studies. This certificate also recognizes a service that the Department of Minority Studies has fulfilled for the

Capstone or Research course: A398 "Introduction to Black Studies Research" or A493 "Senior
Seminar in Afro-American Studies"
Electives (12 credit hours) Four courses chosen from the Department of Minority Studies, must demonstrate a balanced distribution from both Latino Studies and Afro-American Studies.

The Department of Minority Studies fulfills an essential goal of the university's mission in diversity and outreach. This program provides additional opportunities for the region to gain knowledge and expertise in an academic environment about race, class, culture and gender.
VII. Describe any relationship to existing programs within
The certificate will be housed within the Department of Minority Studies and the Division of Arts and Sciences but it has always been conceived as a program that crosses divisions. The Department of Education and Minority Studies are working collaboratively and other partnerships are expected.

The full time and adjunct faculty of the Department of Minority Studies can currently provide offerings for this program on a regular basis. The catalogue of offerings are more than adequate to provide interesting electives. Therefore, the program will be offered within the framework of the campus' current program and funding.
