Household Hazardous Waste Disposal

We come in contact with many hazardous substances everyday. Generally, we call these household hazardous materials. Here is a list of some of materials that you may find in your home or garage.

Batteries, Drain Cleaners, Bleach, Mothballs, Toilet Cleaners, Carpet Cleaners, Kerosene, Pool Chemicals, Photo Chemicals, Upholstery Cleaners, Fuel Oil, Insecticides, Disinfectants, Hair Spray, Polishes, Solvents, Flea Collars and Sprays, Roach and Ant Killers, Rat and Mouse Poisons, and the list continues on . . .

The average Hoosier household contains between 3 and 10 gallons of hazardous wastes. This includes not only the obvious stuff marked POISON! with a skull and crossbones but lots of other things we buy for use around the house, garage, garden, or shop. Certain chemicals in these products can cause water pollution or air pollution if they're carelessly tossed out. But you can help bring an end to environmental pollution from household hazardous wastes. Here are the three easy steps.

  1. Be a smart buyer.
  2. Switch to non-hazardous products that will do the job.
  3. Dispose of hazardous products the safe way.

From time to time, local communities sponsor household hazardous waste disposal programs when residents are invited to bring their household hazardous wastes--motor oil and other car care products, painting supplies, herbicides, pesticides, batteries, etc.--to a collection site where the materials are sorted and packed for shipment to safe disposal facilities. Lake, LaPorte, and Porter Counties do participate in such programs.
