Environmental Management The Environmental Management Program activities include Battery Recycling, Hazardous Waste Management, SARA and Stormwater Quality Management Plan Reporting. Personnel also provide services in the fields of emergency response, air, water, and solid waste. Battery RecyclingThe Lake Michigan Districts Battery Program is free to all residents of Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties. IU Northwest participates in this Battery Recycling program. Hazardous Waste ManagementEH&S coordinates all facets of hazardous waste management in accordance with state and federal regulations, including the identification of hazardous wastes, hazardous waste storage and disposal, and hazardous waste minimization.
SARASARA, or Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act, is the primary means for reporting hazardous chemical usage to the government. EH&S coordinates the SARA initiative for the Indiana University Northwest campus. Stormwater Quality Management Plan (SWQMP)Stormwater is rain or snow melt which has run off the land including hard, “impervious” surfaces like roads, roofs and car parks. The SWQMP outlines Indiana University’s commitments to implementing minimum control measures and best management practices in order to have as little of an impact on the environment as possible.
