National
& State Mathematics Standards
National
Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards. This
course is taught in a manner consistent with NCTMs Professional
Standards for Teaching Mathematics (1991) which address worthwhile
mathematical tasks; the teachers role in discourse; the students
role in discourse; tools for enhancing discourse; the learning environment;
and the analysis of teaching and learning. The Professional Standards
state that effective mathematics teaching requires:
- knowing and understanding mathematics,
students as learners, and pedagogical strategies
- a challenging and supportive classroom
learning environment
- continually seeking improvement
The
Principles and Standards for School Mathematics are available
at http://www.nctm.org/standards/.
Principles
for teachers and schools are in Chapter 2, and Standards are in Chapter
3

To save yourself time and inconvenience in the
future, print out the Standards
for the grade level and content area (number & operations, geometry,
problem solving, etc.) you will be teaching.
Grade level Standards are in the following
chapters: Pre-K-Grade 2 in Chapter
4, Grades 3-5 in Chapter
