Reflection—The Road to Success

IMMEDIATELY following your M201 teaching experience, you are required to reflect on your teaching in writing. This form is for data collection purposes only, and a few words or phrases are acceptable—it is the “sloppy copy” you will use to prepare your teaching experience reflections for your E328 Final Exam. You may also adapt this form for use in collecting data for your E343 Case Study paper—check with your E343 and/or M201 instructors if you are not in Miss Judith’s E343 or M201 sections.

As soon as possible after each M201 teaching experience, expand your thoughts by answering the questions in more detail. It will be easier for you to write your E328 Final Exam Reflection and your E343 Case Study if you avoid meaningless generalities and get to specifics. Ask yourself: Why is this so? What evidence do I have? What does this mean? Why? Why? Why? Go beyond quick, easy answers. Think about concrete examples and evidence.
When reflecting, it is important that you record information about children’s learning—this is confidential information that should not be shared with others.

Directions: A copy of the Final Exam is on the class web site. Print it out and read it before you teach.

1. Child’s name had a misconception about/lacked understanding of. I addressed/plan to address this misconception/understanding . . .

2. Children gained . . .

3. Every child was/was not successful . . .

4. The lesson was too easy/hard . . .

5. I learned (what?) about myself as a teacher . . .

6. The lesson changed from what I originally planned (how/why) . . .

7. The part/task/area I could have expanded (what/why) . . .

8. I was successful (how/why) . . .

9. During my next lesson/teaching experience I will . . .

10. Idea(s) for my next lesson/teaching experience . . .

REMINDER: Your M343 Case Study will focus on ONE child, and what you learned about that child’s ways of understanding and communicating mathematically. It is important to note of how ALL the children respond to you lessons as this will be important for developing your case study paper later on. Your E328 Final Refection will focus on YOU as a teacher and what you learned about teaching an inquiry-based science unit. Although the focus is on you, it is also important to note how children, individual and the group, respond to you lessons. Teaching is a complex activity and learning to observe the milieux of the classroom is a critical factor in learning to become a master teacher.
