Journal Article Critiques

Rational. It is important that you become familiar with the professional literature available concerning mathematics and science teaching with young children. This is both to help you with your teaching and learning experiences this semester, and also to familiarize you with important resources and professional organizations that may prove helpful to you once you become a classroom teacher.

What to Do. For this assignment, you will read and write a brief critique of three articles written in three different popular teaching journals, all of which can be found in the School of Education Library. Many are also available on-line. All journal articles chosen for review must be at least 3 pages in length and must be attached to your paper. Your paper must contain 3 one-page reviews (one for each article) and a 1-2 page reflection about the value of the articles and the journal themselves. The articles reviewed must include one from Teaching Children Mathematics (TCM), one from Childhood Education, and one from a journal of your choice. One of the articles should be about integration of math with science or other content area (language, social studies, etc.). Check to see that your paper meets my high standards—review the Writing Tips before handing it in.

Your critique includes have the following components:

Page 1: Cover sheet with your name and a list of the three articles in APA style. FYI. Information on APA style can be found at: http://www.lesley.edu/faculty/kholmes/libguides/APAprint.html or http://www.lib.usm.edu/userguides/apa.html

Page 3: Critique of Childhood Education article
Page 4: Critique of third article
Page 5: Reflection about the articles and journals as resources. Tell how the articles you selected affected your thinking about teaching elementary mathematics. Examples of guiding questions include:

  • Did your reading affirm or contradict your ideas about mathematics teaching?
  • Is what you read about similar to or different from how you were taught as a child? How?
  • Did any (or all) of the articles cause you to rethink how you might teach mathematics? If so, how will your teaching be different?
  • What do you think of these journals as resources for teachers?
  • Do you think you might to subscribe to any of them? Why or why not?

Attachments: Attach copies of the 3 articles to your paper.

Grading Rubric. NOTE: Due dates and project points will be decided on jointly during the first class meetings. Once the decision is made, a grade rubrics for this assignment will be posted here.
