Master's Degree in Elementary Education

Academic Features:
The master's degree in elementary education is for individuals who want to develop competencies necessary to function as a master teacher and to professionalize a standard teacher's license. The degree focuses on educational inquiry throughout the required course offering culminating with an exit course that requires a research document and oral defense of it. The courses deal in depth in the foundation areas of educational research, philosophy, psychology, and evaluation which are prerequisites to the advanced educational methods courses in language arts, mathematics, reading, science and social studies.

Special Features:
This program emphasizes the research aspects of life long learning once the master's degree is achieved. Master teachers will be able to reflect and make decisions on appropriate methods of learning/teaching and to use them in their own classroom.

Faculty Features:
All education faculty members are terminally degreed. They excel in research activities that eventually lead to publications covering a variety of contemporary educational issues.

Indiana University Northwest Division of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The Indiana Professional Standards Board approved all IU Northwest Division of Education programs for licensure.

Is a master's degree in elementary education required by the state of Indiana Professional Standards Board?

  • No. The standard elementary license may be renewed by successfully completing six credit hours of academic courses every five years. Indiana University Northwest recommends getting a master's degree because school corporations have pay differential for having a master's degree. It is advantageous for a teacher's career development to get a master's degree and to professionalize the elementary license; so that, the teacher is view as a master teacher. To be eligible for an elementary administration and supervision license, the professional elementary teaching license is needed prior to the issuance of that license.
