Originally, the state of Indiana designated that all of Northwestern Indiana from Elkhart county and west to the Illinois state line be designated as St. Joseph County made up of five districts or townships. In 1832 Aaron Stanton led the move to make La Porte a separate county, which became official on May 28, 1832. The area south of what is presently Clinton Township was originally part of Starke County when it was organized, but because people had trouble getting to Knox, the county seat, they petitioned to be annexed to La Porte, which was done 1842.
