Scope and Content

These records document the history of USWA Local 1011 (1942-1970), representing steelworkers at LTV Corporation's East Chicago Works. The collection covers a period when LTV's predecessor, Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, owned the plant. Minute books (1947-1970) comprise the major portion of the collection and contain information from local meetings, local officers' meetings, and stewards. The general meeting volumes provide the most description of local activities and issues; naturally, the earlier minutes furnish better detail, focusing on not only wages and hours but also safety and discrimination. The volumes of local officers' records yield housekeeping data and communications to the local, although some discussions revolve around the 1956 and 1959 strikes. In contrast to the general meeting minutes, the Representative Council minutes supply more information in later volumes. The Council meetings consisted of reports on wildcat strikes, layoffs, and behavior in the mill as well as other events. Finally, Shop Stewards meetings deal with membership reports and recruitment.

The other important series in the 1011 records is a run of The Record (1957-1970), which provides useful stories on union issues and activities. Unfortunately, the run is incomplete, with issues missing from virtually every year.

Considering the importance of USWA Local 1011 in local labor history, the collection lacks many significant records of the local's actions. While the USWA Local 1011 records are incomplete, they do offer valuable documentation of organized steelworkers in the Calumet Region, and, in conjunction with the USWA Local 1010 records, serve as an important source of labor history in northwest Indiana.

For additional collections of data on local labor history, researchers should consult the Archives' collections list and subject index.
