Historical Sketch
In 1835, Merrillville was founded by Jeremiah Wiggins and in deference to Mr. Wiggins it was named Wiggins Point. Later after Wiggins' death, the town thought it would be more appropriate to name the town Centerville. Then in 1848 the town was named Merrillville in honor of William Dudley Merrill, who owned a cheese factory. Back then Merrillville's biggest attraction was the famous California Exchange Inn, which was a popular stopping place for forty-niners on their way to search for gold.
Presently, Merrillville has the distinction of being one of the major centers of commerce in the state. Its large shopping malls attract thousands of people daily. Perhaps Merrillville's biggest attraction is the Holiday Star Theater. It attracts some of the biggest stars in the world to perform there.
