Interests

Mastery learning and alternative grading are my current research interests. I have been experimenting with different methods of motivating students in the classroom as well as with alternative methods of eliminating common misconceptions of college chemistry students.

I am also very interested in encouraging younger students to explore science. I am always happy to judge science fairs as long as they are held when I am not supposed to be teaching. I am also Regional coordinator for the Science Olympiad Science Crime Buster and Forensics. I am Indiana State Science Olympiad Science CrimeBuster and Forensics event coordinator. I am also the National Forensics Event Supervisor. I am working on developing pictures of crime scene footprints, tire prints, etc. that any other coordinators and or teachers may have if they contact me.

I also work with Expanding Your Horizons(EYH), a program aimed at the female Junior High Student. The goal is toprovide an opportunity for girls to explore traditionally challenging fields and see female role models in these fields.

The Science Fair is another area of interest for me. There are several links at the end of this page to help people with the problems of making a good science fair project. In addition, I am always available as a resource for anyone needing help.

Teaching Philosophy:

All students can learn. They all do not learn in the same manner or at the same rate, but all students can learn. The teacher should be a facilitator of that learning. This means that the course has to be flexible enough to allow for all the different learning styles and rates. Society constraints require that everyone must come out of the course at approximately the same place at the same time. This means that some will have to spend more time on the course than others. I believe that the instructor must believe in the material they are teaching so that it is made interesting enough to keep students awake and motivated. I believe that the course should be challenging enough so that students really learn a significant amount of new material. I believe the overall structure of the course should allow both the student and teacher to meet these goals.
