Meeting Minutes

Meeting: 27 February 2004
LCC 140-A 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

PRESENT: C. Scott (Chair), W. Dorin (for J. Knapp), J. Gerzema, R. Kini, T. Stabler, and M. Uncapher and D. Steward, ex officio.

ABSENT: N. DeLeon, J. Knapp

  • Fall 2004 Build Content: brief discussion about Fall build content. The Committee recommended updating the build to include MS Office XP Pro 2003. Other issues with previous build were discussed, but no changes were recommended. Microsoft updates to Windows XP have produced problems keeping Netscape functioning. The Committee will review the continuance of Netscape in the build at its next meeting.
  • Macintosh Operating System: the Committee recommended upgrading the Macintosh laboratories to new eMacs using OS 10 as the operating system. This will require updating of some software, especially graphics software, to integrate with the new operating system. These eMacs are similar in cost to PC's and will be put on a 3-year life cycle, as with the PC's.
  • Wireless Networking: VC Steward informed the Committee of approval by the Student Technology Fee Committee of a new initiative they funded to place up to five (5) wireless access points around the campus for students/staff/faculty to access the IUN network with wireless laptops. Initial placement would be in areas of the campus where students congregate in larger numbers and work. It would serve as our entry into the area, and may become a model for the entire campus in the future. HP experts will be brought to campus to assure that an appropriate configuration is chosen and implemented.
  • Mobile Laboratories: VC Steward also informed the Committee of approval by the Student Technology Fee Committee of another initiative to acquire four (4) sixteen (16) -station mobile computer laboratories for an experiment in Hawthorn Hall. These would be carts containing 16 laptop computers with built-in wireless networking. The cart would also contain a wireless router for connecting to the campus network, and a wireless printer for those times when printing would be necessary. The experiment is intended for the occasional user, not semester-long reservation. The purpose is to assist in meeting the expanding need for computerized classrooms, without removing existing rooms from the standard classroom inventory. It has the potential of significantly increasing the flexibility of classroom usage. There will be significant personnel costs associated with this effort.
  • Hard-Drive Space in Laboratories: several teaching laboratories are reaching the limits of the hard drives in terms of space. The standard computer build is over 12 GB in size, and much specialized software is added for course-specific use in several rooms. When preparing the Fall build, bigger hard drives will be necessary in several laboratories in order to accommodate the faculty's needs. The Committee recommended that the bigger drives be purchased.

The meeting adjourned at 11:35 p.m.
