The Center
CETL has been established at IUN to encourage and support teacher scholarship through collaboration among the Office of Academic Affairs, the Faculty Organization's Faculty Development Committee and FACET members. The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, CETL, began formal operations in the Spring of 2002. The Center is under Academic Affairs and is housed in the Library Conference Center. The Director of the Center reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs. CETL has established a Board of Advisors and a Steering Committee to provide faculty input on setting program priorities.
CETL focuses on improving teaching and learning campus-wide through a number of activities including but not limited to:
- Initiating faculty development programs, including workshops, seminars, and conferences
- Focusing on new faculty and facilitating their orientation to teaching on the IUN campus
- Developing and maintaining a website
- Establishing a collaborative relationship with similar centers across the nation and particularly those within Indiana University and Northwest Indiana
- Disseminating information on effective teaching
- Assisting faculty to effectively integrate technology into their teaching
- Encouraging and facilitating various forms of teaching scholarship and having those forms recognized in the tenure and promotion process.
- Assisting in the development of teaching portfolios
- Pursuing resources to support teaching scholarship
- Developing professional development activities for Adjuncts
CETL Budget
The CETL budget is approved annually by the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.The budget is comprised of various sources of funding including the Teaching Awards Committee, FACET, Action 11, and other special appropriations.
The Director
The Director is a fullf-time academic appointment, whose essential functions include but are not limited to:
- Providing leadership in relation to the completion of the above mentioned activities
- Working collaboratively with the Steering Committee and the Board of Advisors to set program priorities
- Supervising and evaluating CETL personnel
- Monitoring CETL budget and pursuing resources to support teaching scholarship
- Promoting and publicizing CETL goals and programs
- Assisting in securing facilitators for training activities
- Collaborating with instructional technology centers locally, statewide, and nationally to integrate technology into teaching
- Documenting the Center’s effectiveness
The Board of Advisors
The Board of Advisors presently consists of members of the Faculty Development Committee, FACET members, the CETL Search Committee and other Teaching Awardees. The purpose of this Board is to advise the Director on program priorities and to share faculty input on matters related to goals and activities of the Center, as well as to assist with the actual work of the Center by volunteering to mentor, facilitating training, designing sample evaluation instruments, sharing information on teaching, being a vocal supporter of the Center, or other ways that further the work of the Center. The Board of Advisors meets twice a year.
The Steering Committee
The Steering Committee consists of seven people from the Board of Advisors, representing academic units, FACET, and the Faculty Development Committee. They will serve as the working group of the Board and meet with the Director 2-3 times a semester. New members will be selected at the end of each spring semester.
CETL Personnel
CETL Personnel includes a full-time Instructional Design Specialist / Coordinator of Service-Learning and Instructional Technology Specialist, and a part-time Program Assistant.
Instructional Design Specialist / Coordinator of Service-Learning
The Instructional Design Specialist / Coordinator of Service-Learning is a full-time professional staff appointment whose essential functions include but are not limited to:
- Consulting with faculty on issues related to course design, planning, instructional methods, and evaluation
- Coordinating and conducting workshops and other activities related to teaching and learning
- Coordinates Service Learning activities and facilitates the inclusion of service learning into more classes
- Locating resources for faculty on issues related to teaching and learning
- Assisting with the design and development of distance education courses
Instructional Technology Specialist
The Instructional Technology Specialist is a full-time professional staff appointment whose essential functions include but are not limited to:
- Consult with faculty, staff, and students concerning the integration of system-wide technology into instruction ( Oncourse, Oncourse CL, etc.)
- Provide training and consultations on the use of desktop programs in instruction for faculty
- Assisting faculty to effectively integrate technology into their teaching
- Assisting with the design and development of distance education courses
- Assisting with the development of electronic portfolios
Program Assistant
The program assistant is a half-time support staff appointment.
