Jobs Opportunities - ABF Freight System

Job Title:
Management Trainee

Job Description:
The position is a full-time, salaried position of Management Trainee. Trainees are trained in all areas of motor carrier management and sales. Management Trainees first participate in a five-month training program, learning all areas of motor carrier management and sales. The program includes 10 weeks of operational training with front-line supervision, 5 weeks of sales training with local sales representatives, and 5 weeks of office and administrative training. The first 2-1/2 months trainees work with front-line supervisors in three different operational shifts that include evening hours. Through the observation of supervisors, trainees learn job responsibilities such as computer functions, paperwork, and management techniques. At the end of each training segment, trainees are asked to supervise each shift on their own for a specified time period. Other operational segments include safety, maintenance, and transportation. Management trainees then spend five weeks working with local sales staff, accompanying sales representatives on sales presentations and entertainment. They are also trained in paperwork functions, as well as how to access account information from the mainframe database. The balance of the training involves administrative functions, including cash management, customer service, and payroll. Each trainee also works one week with the branch manager of the facility. Upon completion of the training program, trainees are relocated to their first assignment, which is usually as either an operation supervisor or as a sales representative. Operation supervisors are responsible for the direct supervision of drivers and dock personnel on the freight dock. ABF works with each trainee to attempt to find a geographic location that accommodates both ABF and the trainee, but the trainee must be willing to relocate to any US location and must be willing to accept an assignment in either sales or operations. Promotions are based on field assignment performance.

Qualifications:
Business and communications graduates are recruited in addition to other graduates with an interest in the transportation industry. Must be interested in the LTL transportation industry. Must be able to work permanently in the U.S. ABF is looking for individuals:

  • With leadership ability, good people skills, and the ability to motivate others.
  • Are self-starters who exhibit the ability to be successful in a managerial position.
  • Willing to relocate and work unconventional hours and workweeks.
