Programmer Internship

Job Description:
This entry-level position is designed to educate and prepare individuals to take on the responsibility of an Applications Programmer or a Systems Programmer. Incumbents will participate in a four to six week rotation in one of the divisional support areas (Field Support, Unix Operations, Global Communication Services or EDI-Retail Link) and spend a one week rotation in a Wal-Mart Store, Sam’s Club or Distribution Center. At the completion of the support and Store / Club / DC rotations, incumbents will then be placed onto an applications development team, a systems team, or a networking team. On the development team, the incumbent will be under the direct supervision of more senior programmers, and will have opportunities to code, test and debug simple programs. On the systems or networking team, the incumbent will be under the direct supervision of more senior engineers, and will participate in the development, modification, and maintenance of systems and / or networks. All incumbents will work closely with the mentor and manager of the team to ensure that they are sufficiently developing to meet the minimal requirements of an Applications Programmer or a Systems Programmer.

  • Eligibility Requirements:
    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Management Information Systems, Computer Engineering or a computer programming related degree, with preferably a 3.0 GPA.
    • Ability to program in more than one programming language.
    • Demonstrate high ability in assigned technical assessments.
    • Provide a completed application, resume and transcript.
    • Interview with a member of the Wal-Mart ISD Recruiting or Management Team.
  • Prospective Skills:
    • Client / PC Workstation Development: C, C + +, Visual Basic.
    • Java Mainframe: COBOL, CICS, JCL, MVS, DB2, IMS, OS390.
    • Web Technologies: XML, ASP, JSP.
    • Open Systems Database: Informix, Oracle, Teradata.
    • Operating Systems: Unix, NT, Windows 2000, Windows Vista, Windows 2008, Linux.
    • Networking: Ethernet, VSAT, Frame Relay, ATM, TCP/IP, LAN, WAN Telecommunications, Radio Frequency Technology.
