Steel Student Employment Program has been designed for the student actively seeking a Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene or Environmental Health. The program provides the student with the opportunity to gain meaningful "hands on" work experience in the Safety organization of a Fortune 500 Company, where Safety is its #1 Core Value. Responsibilities could be as follows:

  • Learn about the administration of the U. S. Steel Safety Process to ensure a safe work environment within the assigned facility.
  • Assist organizations in improvements in their safety performance including coordination of programs to prevent incidents as well as assist in conducting incident / injury investigations.
  • Assist in integration of Safety Practices and Principles through the assigned facility, including the application of company and plant safety goals and objectives.
  • Participate in providing technical and compliance related support to the assigned plant and assist in the development of safety processes and programs driving improvement in safety performance.
  • Learn and understand the steel making process.
  • Requirements:
    • Candidates must be a full-time, degree-seeking student enrolled in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health, or a related-field.
    • Candidates must have completed or be working towards completion of their sophomore year and be in good academic standing.
    • Candidates must be willing to work either one of two schedules:
      • Part-time during the school year and full-time during the summer; or
      • A minimum of 2 terms, consisting of a 40-hour work week while participating in the Student Employment Program.
    • You must continue to maintain an acceptable grade point average while participating in the program.
    • Candidate must have experience with Microsoft Office products, specifically Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

If your school has a program that permits the granting of credits for this work experience, arrangements may be made to accommodate this by agreement between your Academic Advisor and U. S. Steel.
