Filing a Complaint

Students who have been victimized by sexual harassment have a number of options concerning where to file a complaint. These include:

1. University: Contact the designated university official and submit a written complaint.

2. Local Law Enforcement Officials: Contact a local police department and complete a written incident report.

3. Office for Civil Rights (OCR)--Direct: Contact a regional OCR office or the OCR web page and complete a written Discrimination Complaint Form.

4. OCR--Delayed: Contact a regional OCR office or the OCR web page, complete a written Discrimination Complaint Form, and attach a copy of the university's final written report.

5. OCR--Advocate: Your advocate contacts the appropriate regional OCR office to obtain a Discrimination Complaint Form. The completed form is then submitted to the OCR for their action.

6. Civil Court Complaint: Search for and hire a competent, supportive, aggressive attorney. Your attorney will advise you of your filing options under state and federal law. After selecting the option(s) you wish to pursue, your attorney will file the appropriate paperwork to initiate your lawsuit.

7. Media Complaint: Contact local (or even national) media representatives at newspapers, magazines, radio stations, and/or television stations and share your complaint, your evidence, and the institution's grossly inadequate response.
