RedHawks Basketball Game Recap - November 5, 2007

Redhawks Win Opener!

The men's basketball team opened the 2007-2008 season with an 84-76 win over visiting Purdue North Central. The game went back and forth for most of the first half. The Redhawks took a 7 point lead late in the half, with senior Brad Smith contributing 5 points during that stretch. IU Northwest led 42-39 at the half. At the start of the second half, PNC took advantage of a couple of turnovers and hit back-to-back 3 pointers to take a 45-42 lead. The Redhawks stayed close throughout the half. Sophomore Jason Porter came off the bench to grab a couple of rebounds and hit a big basket on the baseline to keep the Redhawks close. Down by a point with 3:30 to play, the Redhawks responded by scoring 9 unanswered points. Sophomore Pete Trgovich hit a 3 pointer, followed by a 3 pointer by junior Ben Beard, and then another by freshman AJ Repay to give IU Northwest a 76-68 lead. Freshman Durrell Whitehead hit some clutch free throws upon re-entering the game after taken an inadvertent blow to the head. Pete Trgovich led the Redhawks with 22 points while Jon Shurr and AJ Repay scored 13 points apiece. Jon Shurr also grabbed 10 rebounds. Justin Ortiz led the team in assists and played an outstanding floor game.
