Free Skin Cancer Screening
Who/What:
Attending physicians and residents from the department of dermatology at the
University of Illinois at Chicago will conduct a free screening for skin
cancers, including precancerous abnormalities such as actinic keratosis.
Where:
Chicago Circle Center, Room 611
When:
Wednesday, August 18, 9:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Details:
Caused by cumulative sun exposure, actinic keratosis affects as many as 10
million Americans, more than all skin cancers combined.  Yet many people ignore
the lesions or do not recognize them as abnormal.
Actinic keratosis appears as rough, red, scaly patches, crusts or sores on the
top layer of the skin.  Left untreated, the lesions may progress to squamous
cell carcinoma - hence, their characterization as "precancerous."  Because
actinic keratosis takes years to develop, the condition usually first appears in
older people, although cases have been reported in people in their 40s and 50s.
If diagnosed in the early stages, all types of skin cancer are treatable and,
in most cases, curable.
The incidence of skin cancer in the U.S. is rising.  According to the American
Cancer Society, during 2004 there are expected to be over 7,000 deaths from
melanoma and 2,200 deaths from non-melanoma skin cancers, including basal cell
and squamous cell carcinomas.
The screening event is made possible by an educational grant from 3M
Pharmaceuticals, a division of 3M Health Care, maker of branded prescription
drug products related to dermatology and other medical specialties.

Archaeology at the Indiana State Fair-   Saturday, August 21, 2004, 2 p.m.- 6p.m.
Front porch and/or small shelter at the DNR building, Indiana State Fair
grounds, Indianapolis. Bring your artifacts to the Natural Resources Building
for identification. This is an opportunity for Hoosiers to learn more about
prehistoric and historic artifacts that they have found or own. Join DHPA
archaeologist Jim Mohow at this event just prior to the beginning of Indiana
Archaeology Month as he shares what he knows in a format similar to the popular
PBS show. Unlike antique roadshows, financial appraisals will not be provided.
Jim will also record site information from those who would like to share
information about archaeological sites in our state (the more we know about
where sites are, the easier it is to try and afford protection for them). For
additional information, contact  Jim Mohow at 317/232-1646.

NEW COS FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES HOME PAGE
Community of Science (COS) recently released a new home page. The new
COS Funding Opportunities home page,
http://fundingopps.cos.com
has not only been updated with regard to its cosmetic appearance, but it
has also been redesigned to significantly improve its functionality.
COS users can now do a Simple Search directly from the Funding Opportunities
home page.  By reducing visual clutter and eliminating the
number of layers of screens required to access the search page, COS has made its
product much more user-friendly, and usable.
This Simple Search interface behaves in the same way as the "All Fields" field
in COS' Main Search interface. That is, the words or phrases
entered by users will search across all text fields.
Currently, there are 23,000+ records in the COS Funding Opportunities database,
representing over 400,000 funding opportunities, worth over
$33 billion, so there is probably a funding opportunity out there for you, just
waiting to be discovered.        From Marie Czach

5) IUN notices:

Bursar: tuition and fees are Thursday, August 26, in the Bursar's Office.  You
may not receive a bill in the mail, but they are still due on that date.
Financial Aid:
It is suggested that ALL students who have not received a "Financial Aid
Notification" letter by Friday, August 13, have an alternate plan to make
satisfactory on-time payment arrangements with the Office of the Bursar, without
the use of financial aid, by the Thursday, August 26 on-time payment date.
These students should also have their own money available to purchase their
required books.
Students, who have NOT yet started to apply for 2004-05 academic year financial
aid by August 2, 2004, are urged to prepare IMMEDIATELY to make satisfactory
payment arrangements with the Office of the Bursar.  Although every effort will
be made to process all completed financial aid applications as quickly as
possible, it is VERY UNLIKELY that a financial aid award can be made by August
26, to a student who just begins to apply for financial aid on or after August
2.  These students should also have their own money available to purchase their
required books.
