1) THE BOOKSALE IS COMING.... October 27th thru the 31st

Info at http://www.iun.edu/~anthronw/cal/2003/10-27-03.htm

We need help for the booksale: people to set up, sell books and tee shirts, open and close in the morning and evening, sort and unbox books, and finally to close up.

The setup will be done on Sunday October 26 beginning at 1 pm and going for 2 or 3 hours depending on how many people show up; please come if you can. We also especially need help on Monday all day, Friday afternoon to pack up, and early and late every day (9:30 to noon and 5 to 7:30), but we can use help, even a half hour at a time, on any day at any time. If you can, please come to the anthro club organizational meeting on Wednesday, October 22, any time between 3:00 and 4:30 pm, but it is fine just to show up at the sale whenever you can help.

If you want to donate books, please come to the booksale itself; we can follow you back to your office or car with carts and boxes to pick up your books then.

And don't forget to shop for books at a dollar each; these poor, starving, abandoned books need good, loving homes.

2) at IUN: Please announce to your classes that the first Women's Studies event of the school year will take place on Tuesday, October 21, 2003 from 2:30 - 4:30 pm in the Savannah Auditorium. Everyone is invited to attend!

We will be screening "Rachel's Daughters: Searching for the Causes of Breast Cancer" as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Additional information and discussion will follow the video screening. If you can only stay for a portion of the scheduled time, we would still love to see you there.

Please support this and all our upcoming WOST events. Follow this link for a complete listing - http://www.iun.edu/~wostnw/events.htm

I look forward to seeing you all there!

and: You are cordially invited to attend the October edition of the Glen Park Conversation, scheduled, for Tuesday, October 21, 2003 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. in the IUN Library, 2nd Floor. We will hear from several guests.

Guadalupe Valtierra, Chancellor of Ivy Tech, will talk about programs offered at that campus. Gary Career Center Principal Claudia Drayton will describe the offerings at the Career Center, and our own Trish Ierino, of the IU Credit Union, will speak about all of the great services of the IUCU. As always, Conversations Coordinator Garrett Cope will have some door prizes to give away to some lucky folks. Please join us for some good conversation and fun with our Glen Park neighbors. A splendid time is guaranteed for all.

6) Call for Papers

 RETHINKING GENDER

Submission Deadline Extended to NOVEMBER 17, 2003

Attention graduate students and untenured faculty:

The Berkeley Journal of Sociology (BJS) invites submissions of well-researched, theoretically interesting papers on issues relating to gender and society for Volume 48, 2004. We are particularly interested in comparative research and empirical examples that shed light on the social construction of gender. Examples of possible topics include, but are not limited to, the intersection of gender and:

                 --work --the state

                 --religion --migration

                 --colonialism --medicine/medicalization

                 --sexuality --the body

Additional topics include masculinities; women and right-wing movements; care work; and alternative gender systems.

The BJS provides graduate students and untenured faculty in the US and internationally with a forum for publishing original, high-quality sociological research. Many current academic luminaries published in the BJS early in their careers, including Pierre Bourdieu, Michael Burawoy, Craig Calhoun, Nancy Chodorow, Randall Collins, Peter Evans, Anthony Giddens, Jurgen Habermas, Arlie Hochschild, Saskia Sassen, Juliet Schor, Theda Skocpol and Erik Olin Wright.

Students and faculty from departments outside the discipline of sociology (such as political science, women's studies, anthropology) are encouraged to submit articles that have a sociological orientation and pertain to such issues as listed above. Researchers may include suggestions for constructing social policy, but these suggestions should be strongly supported by empirical sociological research. Submissions for Volume 48 are due NOVEMBER 17th, 2003. All papers submitted to the journal will be considered for presentation at the 4th annual BJS conference in March 2004.

Send two paper copies of your submission (including a brief abstract) to:

 Berkeley Journal of Sociology

 410 Barrows Hall #1980

 Department of Sociology

 University of California

 Berkeley, CA 94720-1980
