There is a $50 transportation fee. Course Objectives: to study the biology and behavior of live primates, and to learn formal observational techniques. There is no required book for this course, but you are expected to study up on primates;Suggested Readings: Bromley, Monkeys, Apes, and other primates (available as optional book for $4 at IUN Bookstore - if you never read this for A103, buy it and read it NOW) Paterson, Primate Behavior Workbook Falk, The Complete Introduction to Primate Diversity Rowe, Pictorial Guide to the Living Primates Strier, Karen Primate Behavioral Ecology Walker's Mammals of the World (found in the reference section of library) Time-Life Nature, Primates. (On reserve) ZooBooks (several on apes on reserve) Collinge, Intro to Primate Behavior Preston-Mafham, Primates of the World Small, Female Choices Richard, Primates in Nature Napier, Natural History of the Primates Smuts, Primate Societies Other Requirements: visit the zoos several times; there will be some discussions as we observe; you also must write reports of your independent observations, and participate in one or two formal group observations.. Field Trips: Meet at the IUN police station at the north end of Tamarack at 8:30 am; Van returns after 6 pm. Bring binoculars, note pad, audio tape recorder, comfortable shoes. The fee you paid covers the van, gas, and half a double (2 bed) room in Cincinnati (single room is extra cost); it does NOT include admission to the zoos, nor food. Course Dates: Saturdays only except for Sat/Sun Aug 5/6. July 8: Field museum, Lincoln Park Zoo no admission charges. July 15: Brookfield Zoo (behind the scenes of ape house, timed observation of baboons) July 22 off week July 29: Racine (free) and Milwaukee Zoos (return 9 pm) August 5 & 6: Sat: Michigan City, South Bend Zoos; Sun: Cincinnati Zoo; return very late. Assignments: (each assignment is due one week later. July 8: Museum: lecture only; zoo: lecture; you will have an A105 zoo report instruction book, please go thru the motions of looking at everything it tells you to observe, but the only item you have to record is to carefully observe and record the locomotion of any two different species in the Brach primate house. Write it up as a 3 to 4 page reprt including a comparison of the two. July 15: you will participate in a formal timed observation of baboons; you will watch one animal for one hour, and turn in the ID forms and record of his behavior. July 29: you will report on what you observe about bonobo social/sexual behavior. Aug 5/6: no formal report, but I will be asking questions about what you are looking at. If you miss a trip, that takes a full letter off your grade, BUT I will allow you to go to that zoo on your own as a make up; you cannot pass the course if you miss two trips without doing any make up trips.
