Anthropology Club Minutes for October 8, 2004

I. Upcoming Events: We need to figure out a system to organize club outings.

  • Suggested that before we try and organize a carpool we should make sure at least one of the executive committee members are going or a club advisor.
  • Also have a sign up dead line
  • Wind, Rain, and Fire Benefit Pow Wow (October 16-17)
  • Info from Charlotte about the Oriental Institute (Volunteer Training for new gallery: “Empires of the Fertile Crescent,” opening January 2005)
    • Wednesday, October 13 th (6-8pm)
      • Breasted Hall
      • “Introduction to Empires of the Fertile Crescent” by Geoff Emberling (Museum Director)
    • Saturday, October 16 th (10-12pm)
      • Breasted Hall
      • “ Assyria and the West” by Prof John Brinkman
    • Monday October 18 th (10-12pm)
      • Archaeologist Abbas Abdelieh topic is to be announced
    • Saturday, October 30 th (10-12pm)
  • Breasted Hall
  • “ Megiddo and Ancient Israel” by Gabrielle Novacek
    • Saturday, October 30 th (1-3pm)
      • Breasted Hall
      • “ Megiddo and Ancient Israel” by David Schloen
  • Other dates and speakers through November will be announced at following meeting as well as on November calendar sheets.
  • “Unveiling Mauchu Peachu (miss spelled)” a lecture given by Brian Bower
    • Friday December 3 rd At the Field Museum at 2:00pm
    • We may be able to get a tour but we need a minimum of 15 people

D. Idea to have students that are presenting in November at the COAS conference give presentations to the club on a Tuesday meeting for practice

II. Possible Fall Speakers: In order to concrete speaker dates we need to get club meetings set for after October. (Note: I’m sure I am leaving out some possible speakers and ideas so please contact me if you have any ideas).

  • Suggestion to start meetings up again after the book sale starting with Tuesday November 9 th from 4-5

B. Michelle has contacted Dr. Scooter Pegram as a possible speaker on Sociolinguistics.

  • Have thank you letters been sent out to field school presenters?
  • What dates are looking good for him so far?
  • Dr. Elizabeth Lonsdorf (primatologist)
    • Contact info elonsdorf@lpzoo.org
    • Would probably be a good idea to contact her now for next semester or next year
  • Dr. Diane Wallander (primatologist/biologist)
  • Other recommendations? Walpoff (probably misspelled)
    • Don’t have contact info

III. One Dollar Used Book Sale (October 25-29)

A. Need many volunteers throughout week and especially Sunday, Monday, and Friday.

1. Will get free t-shirt after volunteering for three hours

2. Need to start a sign up sheet as well as a person or committee to keep track of event signups (Note: I can be there Friday, some of day Monday, and Sunday)

B. Need more cultural stuff to sell at book sale

1. Tee-shirt idea representing faces that are considered beautiful in different cultures

IV. National Association of Student Anthropologists

A. Tried to order the student handbook for successful clubs but was unsuccessful. The ordering link was not active.

1. Possible solution: emailed the web master to see what was up.

B. They do have an option to register clubs URL nation wide on their website in the club directory.

1. In order to get more info the web master was contacted.

  • The webmaster sent me an email saying she would get back to me in the week of October 11 th

V. Open discussion and Vessel.

A. Old vessel was found

1. New vessel from Kathy is in the Women’s center, in a labeled box. But as of now we have no questions for it. Should we make some up to get some convos going?
