I. Old Business
A. COAS Faculty and Student Conference
1. The ten best student papers will be published in a journal.
- The Club may donate funds for the journal depending upon how much
money is necessary, and depending upon how much funding comes from
Student Life.
- As of now it is not known how much money will be necessary to publish
the journal.
- If necessary we may request funds from student life. A form for
the IUN Student Activity Fund Trustees Petition for Funds has been
picked up and will be kept in the Anthropology Club folder. This
would need to be completed by club advisor and a student member of
the executive committee.
- In order to peruse this business the club has formed a committee
(Mara and Torie).
2. Abstracts are due May 3, 2004, and the Conference is set for next
fall on November 12, 2004.
3. Further matters concerning the conference will be carried over in
the clubs fall agenda.
B. Summer Primatology field trips
1. One of the overnight trips will be to Cincinnati. Students are charged
$40 each for gas and mileage on the mini bus. They will also be responsible
for lodging, food, and possibly admission. It is estimated that one overnight
field trip will cost roughly $150 dollars per student. (There may be more
than one overnight field trip but I am not sure. As of now it is also
unknown about how many students will be attending).
2. There will also be various day field trips. (I am not sure how many
but Dr. Mucci has the details).
3. Do we want to help students pay for this trip with the Anthropology
Club conference grant funds?
(a) Club notes from October 24, 2003 state the available capped amounts
as being up to $100 dollars for an over night stay, and up to $50 dollars
for a day trip.
(b) The executive committee will have to talk and vote about this matter
to get it rapped up hopefully before the class starts. So we should start
discussing it via email.
C. Calendar for Club as well as Outside Anthropology Conferences and
Events
1) There is room and capabilities to make a calendar on the club website.
Club members could submit links, dates, and events to the webmaster, Mike,
to post on the website.
2) We may also need some sort of hard copy, maybe a regular calendar,
to bring to the meetings to inform every one of upcoming events.
II. New Business
A. Library Donations for the Book sale
1. The library has many more books to donate to the club.
B. Brain Storming for Fall Semester Speakers
1. Neil Haskell, another forensic entomologist studies beetles and
may be a nice follow up to Dr. Greenberg’s presentation.
2. Scooter Pegram is a sociolinguist and a prof at IUN. He was originally
contacted to speak at next years Darwin Day, but we asked if he would
like to be one of our Friday night speakers and he accepted.
3. Elizabeth Lonsdorf is a primatologist whose research deals with
how young chimps learn to modify vegetation in order to catch termites.
She is also the director of field conservation at the Lincoln Park Zoo.
(a) Mara gave us some informative links about her work and contact
info:
http://www.national geographic.com/emerging/profiles/lonsdorf.html

C. Potential speakers will be contacted sometime during the summer,
and continuing into the fall semester. We could give them Friday night
dates to choose from.
