Anthropology Club Minutes for January 22, 2004

I. Old Business Reviewed

A. W-9 form and letter for Dr. Greenberg's talk reviewed and approved.

B. Reminder about next Friday's "Caveman" viewing

-Potlatch format, i.e. members to bring food item to share but nothing too elaborate
-more fliers will be posted to advertise event.

C. New club website is up and running.

-meeting minutes now listed on site.
-members are encouraged to submit pictures or other items to include.

D. Still need ideas for additional Darwin Day speakers.

-Larry Ciupik and Paul Kern already scheduled to speak.
-Dr. Mucci will try to contact Cynthia O'Dell (psychology) and/or Kevin Kennedy (biology) as possibilities.

E. Need update on digital camera purchase for club

-Jennifer S. to contact Kathy F. on status.

F. Still need ideas for honors tea awards.

-Already an award given for Outstanding Anthro. Student
-idea floated for club itself to recognize/award individuals.

G. Student/Faculty collaboration to purchase videos/fossils for anthro. dept.

-Dr. Mucci and other faculty members to create wish lists for new materials with student input/feedback welcomed.

II. New Business

A. Club logo design

-Jackie Donelson, contest winner, agreed to let us use other designs she created for club purposes.
-club agreed to post winning design around campus announcing the new logo and contest winner.
-idea floated to run new logo announcement in newspaper.

B. New club t-shirts/bookbags

-members agreed on new Darwin t-shirts for upcoming D. Day event. Cara will order 33 shirts in oatmeal color with Darwin 's portrait on front.
- discussed other club items that new logo could be printed on such as mugs, t-shirts, sweatshirts, bookbags.
-agreed to order bookbags in two colors with logo printed in contrasting colors.

C. Potential field school opportunities

-Tori passed around fliers announcing field schools in Ecuador and Hawaii
-also circulated current issue of AAA journal listing several ethnographic field opportunities.

III. Open Discussion

A. Pat asked Dr. Mucci to verify whether primates had existed in North America during Paleocene.

-Yes, but were small rat-like creatures.

B.  Pat also introduced discussion about primate anatomical errors frequently seen in stuffed animal toys.

-Dr. Mucci enlightened club with short history of how Curious George actually started out as a capuchin monkey but publishers had authors change him into a baby chimpanzee, (i.e. erase his tail from the illustrations).

C.  Jennifer suggested that a large poster of Darwin for the D. Day proceedings would add a nice touch to the festivities.

-Cara and/or Tori (?) will look into ordering one.

D. Vessel of Intrigue Discussion!!!

-the vessel returned after a year long sabbatical.
-Pat retrieved the intriguing queston "Why do all cultures have some form of religion?"
-a thought provoking discussion ensued, but ultimately no definitive answer was reached.
