Medical Laboratory Technology

Notice of Program Closure

In keeping with its decision to focus on baccalaureate and higher degree programs, Indiana University Northwest has made a decision to discontinue the Associate of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology and Phlebotomy Technician Certificate programs.  No further students will be admitted to these programs, and the last students will graduate from the MLT program in May 2009.

Graduates of these programs should be advised that academic transcripts will continue to be available from the Registrar of Indiana University Northwest in perpetuity and clinical files will be kept as required.  If you need further information, please contact Beverly Lewis-Burton at 219-980-6863 or Professor Susan Higgins, Program Director Clinical Laboratory Sciences at 219-980-6923.  After May 2009 contact the Allied Health Sciences office at 219-980-6899.

DEGREE: Associate of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology

ACADEMIC FEATURES:
The medical laboratory technician (MLT) is an indispensable member of the health care team. Working under the direct supervision of a medical technologist, the MLT performs a large variety of laboratory tests in order to diagnose diseases and monitor their treatment.

Medical laboratory technicians perform tests in each laboratory department, including hematology, chemistry, immunology, microbiology, and immunohematology. They use manual techniques as well as advanced instrumentation. They are also adept at collecting blood and helping assess the laboratory's quality control program.

The MLT Associate Degree Program prepares the student for a satisfying career in laboratory medicine. The curriculum consists of general education courses, technical/professional courses in medical laboratory technology, and clinical experience in an hospital. The program takes a minimum of 21 months to complete. General education courses (those without the AHLT designation) may be taken before being admitted to the program.

PROGRAM ADMISSION PROCESS:

The applicant must be a high school graduate or equivalent.

Prospective students must apply for acceptance to Indiana University Northwest.

Once admitted the student must apply for admission to the Medical Laboratory Technology Program. The application may be obtained from the Division of Allied Health Sciences.

The application for admission must be submitted by APRIL 1 for programs beginning in the fall. Applications may also be considered for the spring semester depending on the availability of positions in the program.

All applications are reviewed by the Admissions Committee for the Medical Laboratory Technology Program. The committee reviews high school and/or college transcripts and requests personal interviews with prospective students prior to final selection.

High school students preparing for admission to the Medical Laboratory Technology Program are required to complete one year of high school algebra and one year of high school chemistry or the equivalent.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the academic admission requirements of students entering the MLT program, the following non-academic essential requirements are also expected of all students:

  • Good vision needed for the delicate testing required in the use of the microscope and other sensitive optical and analytical instruments.
  • Manual dexterity necessary for pipetting and working with precision instruments.
