Comedy Writing for Stand Up

This is your opportunity to learn the basic elements of comedy writing as it applies to stand up. You will learn how to develop material into routines, network, stage persona, and professional conduct. You will write your own material and at the end of the course your routine will be performed for your friends, relatives, and others.

Harmonica Workshop 

Learn to play the 10-hole (Diatonic) blues harmonica in styles that can be used to play Blues, American Folk, Jazz, Gospel, and Country Music. After learning the basics, you will play your tunes using a microphone and guitar amplifier. Discussions will include the history, cultural aspects, and master artists of the Harmonica. Details for purchasing your harmonica (about $28) will be mailed to you.

Photography – The Basics

You will learn techniques to produce great portraits and better scenic pictures. Course highlights include photography demonstrations, shooting assignments, and creative digital imaging. An evening of Photoshop techniques will be introduced.  Topics may be added based on a student driven curriculum. You will need a SLR film or digital camera for the class (SLR preferred). Optional equipment: flash and hand held light meter. There will be a Saturday outdoor on location shoot. Both internationally noted lecturers and Master Photographers Bill Eaton and Edda Taylor will teach the course, with others making guest appearances. If class size permits, you may have a class at Edda Taylor's studio in Crown Point.

Photography – Intermediate 

Amateur or professional photographers with intermediate to advance knowledge will learn to make great images from portraits, fine art, illustrative, glamour or everyday photography. The course will include intermediate to advanced techniques of your camera equipment, lens films / digital, metering for corrective lighting, and professional techniques to make your images look outstanding through better subject posing, correct subject placement, color harmony, composition, lighting (indoor/outdoor), metering, and lens usage. A discussion will include the different computer programs that you can use to correct and enhance your images. Students will need to provide a 35mm or larger format camera and lens, film and processing fees, flash, light meter if you have hand held type, and samples of their work if available. There will be a Saturday outdoor on location shoot. The time and location to be discussed. Both internationally noted lecturers and Master Photographers Bill Eaton and Edda Taylor will teach the course. A lighting demonstration and hands on photo shoot will meet at the studio at Edda Taylor studio if class size permits.

Pre-Algebra

This class has been designed by the math department at IU Northwest. It does not have any college credit awarded for a degree. After this course, you will be able to work with decimals, percentages, fractions, and signed numbers. You will develop the skills to solve real world problems and take an algebra class. Tests and quizzes will be given to monitor progress. Upon successful completion, students should be prepared to take the M007 class at IU Northwest.

Book:  A Basic College Mathematics, 8th edition by Lial, Salzman, and Hestwood (Addison-Wesley, ISBN-9780321557124. The price of the text is about $138 and will be available in the IU Northwest bookstore for purchase.  Used books may be available or other sources of purchase may be explored.  Students can rent this text for a semester from an outside vendor for $9.99. Students are responsible for obtaining the book before the first day of class.

21st Century Dating

If you are single, lonely, or confused about the opposite sex then take this course and improve your social and love life. Each participant will learn the importance of expressing their real, true desires, interests, and intentions to members of the opposite gender in a manner that will provoke strong romantic interest. This skill will help you quickly identify when a potential romantic companion is attempting to employ manipulative ‘head games’ with you or is sincere. The instructor has appeared on national television and has been featured in major media publications as a dating and relationship expert. Optional book available in class.
