Freshmen Scholarships

Below are scholarships available directly from IU Northwest for the 2008-2009 academic year:

Freshmen Scholarships
Early admission to IU Northwest is the best way to assure scholarship consideration. Generally within two weeks of admission, students meeting criteria will be sent notification concerning admissions- based scholarships and, when applicable, an application for any competitive scholarships (pending deadlines). Applications are also available online.

Important Notes:
To be eligible for consideration, student must be admitted to the university prior to the deadline for scholarship (in parenthesis). Scholarships are for first semester freshmen enrolling in the fall semester directly from high school.

  • SAT total refers only to Critical Reading and Math score total. 
  • ACT score refers to composite score.
  • GPA is based on a 4.0 scale.
  • Rank is based on 7th semester.
Admissions-based Scholarships / No additional application is required
High School Seniors who enroll directly from a state accredited high school may be eligible for one of the following renewable scholarships:
  • Valedictorian Scholarship
    Incoming freshmen ranked #1 in their high school graduating class. Award is for tuition, mandatory fees and books.
  • Salutatorian Scholarship
    Incoming freshmen ranked #2 in their high school graduating class. Award is for tuition and mandatory fees. 
  • Special Academic Scholarship
    Incoming freshmen ranked in the top 10% of their graduating class or  have a 3.5 cumulative GPA and have SAT scores of 1100 (ACT 24). Award is for full tuition. 
  • Chancellor’s Merit Scholarship
    Incoming full-time student with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and SAT scores of 1000 (ACT 22).  Award is for $1,000.00 per academic year.
Competitive Scholarships / Require additional application
High School Seniors who enroll directly from a state accredited high school  may be eligible for one of the following renewable scholarships:
  • Baccalaureate / Medical School (BMD) Scholarship (Deadline: January 15th)
    Incoming freshmen with a 3.5 cumulative GPA and SAT scores of  1200.  Preference given to high school seniors residing in or attending high school in an urban medically underserved area in northwest  Indiana.  Recipient must be willing to practice four years in a medically  underserved urban area of Indiana. Award is for undergraduate tuition and provisional admissions into Indiana University School of Medicine. Financial need may be taken into consideration.  Print cover letter (for scholarship requirements) and application.
  • Chase Scholarship (Deadline: January 15th)
    Preference will be given to African-American or Latino students, who reside in Lake or Porter County in Indiana, and have demonstrated financial need. To compete for this award, students should rank in the top 25% of their graduating class and demonstrate leadership ability. Performance on the SAT shall be given consideration. Award is for full tuition, mandatory fees and books. Print cover letter (for scholarship requirements) and application.
  • Barden Gary Scholarship (Deadline: May 19, 2008)
    Incoming freshman ranked in the top 20% of their graduating class with a 3.3 cumulative GPA and SAT scores of 1100 CR +MA score or a 24 ACT composite score.  Candidate must be a Gary resident.  Scholarship is a one-time award of $5000 covering a period of two academic years (payable in two installments of $2500 each in the fall semester of each year within the Scholarship period with the condition that the student maintains eligibility in order to receive the second installment). Financial need may be taken into consideration. Print cover letter (for scholarship requirements) and application.
