PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE
The grant provides release time from teaching for full-time faculty engaged in research leading to a publishable article, book, or scholarly paper.
ELIGIBILITY
Limited to tenure-track and tenured faculty.
LIMIT OF SUPPORT
The grant consists of a three credit hour reduction of teaching load. This release time, plus the already existing 25 percent FTE release time for research, is designed to enable a faculty member to complete an on-going project. The grant does not provide a direct cash award to the applicant but rather provides the applicant's department or division with funds sufficient to pay for an adjunct instructor. The grants are available only during the academic year.
FILING DEADLINE
The filing deadline is October 17, 2003. Please indicate on the application the semester preferred for the time release grant. Please keep a copy of your application on file for personal use.
AWARD NOTICE
A letter from the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs is sent in December.
LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
Applicants are encouraged to include at least one letter of recommendation from a scholar outside the institution who is acquainted with the applicant's research. Letters should be addressed to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
RESTRICTIONS/OBLIGATIONS
- Grants are not awarded to faculty members who have not completed all of the requirements for the terminal degree in their discipline.
- The grant is not applicable during the summer months.
- Proposals which fall under the categories of "faculty development", "curriculum development", "needs assessment", etc., are not applicable under this program.
- The grant may not be used to provide salary or supplementary pay for the investigator.
- The applicant must explain how he or she accounts for the three hours of FTE already allotted for research and why this extra amount is necessary.
- Applicants for the grant will be required to have a written statement from the department and/or division chairperson giving approval to the three-hour reduction of teaching load.
- Applicants are expected to continue at IUN through the following academic year.
- Any application involving the use of human subjects must be accompanied by evidence that it has been approved by the IUN Human Subjects Committee. Without such approval and in the absence of unusual extenuating circumstances, an application will not be considered.
- Any applications involving the use of animals must be accompanied by evidence that it has been approved by the Northwest Animal Resource Committee.
- All faculty members who receive an award must file a brief informative report with the Academic Affairs Office upon completion of their project (or fellowship). If the work is not completed by the end of the Fall Semester following the receipt of the grant (or fellowship), a progress report must be submitted. A final report should be submitted when the project is completed. Failure to submit these reports will cause a faculty member to be ineligible for all categories of IUN support for research and teaching development.
SPECIAL NOTE
- Applicants seeking other forms of research support (i.e., typing, clerical assistance, etc.) to accompany the Time-Release Grant should also fill out a Grant-In-Aid of Research application.
- The project should be described in enough detail to adequately justify the requested grant. Care should be taken in filling out the application. The Grants and Research Development Committee is particularly concerned with the methodology of the research. The faculty member is advised to be thorough in preparing the application adding supplementary materials where considered relevant. Be specific and try to write with an educated lay reader in mind. Avoid language which tends to reflect a specialized discipline.
FORM ROUTE
Application should be sent to the department chairperson (where appropriate) and then to the division head for recommendation. From there it is sent to the Academic Affairs Office (original and three copies) where it is evaluated by the Grants and Research Development Committee. The grant application is then forwarded to the Academic Affairs Office with the Committee's recommendation.
