Remonstrance Process Instructions:
New Course, New to IU Northwest Course, and Course Change Requests

  • The person proposing the course should obtain the appropriate multi-part carbon form (Two types of form exist:  New Course and Course Change.) from the unit secretary.  If the unit secretary does not have the appropriate form, contact IU Printing Services (812) 855-6075.
  • Next, the individual should carefully complete the multi-part form according to the instructions on its back, using a typewriter. Attach any necessary supporting documentation. This multi-part form is still required by IU. Note:  if you are completing a “New to IU Northwest” course request, cross out “New Course Request” or “Course Change” (which is located in the upper left corner of the form) and type “New to IU Northwest Campus.”
  • Then, the individual must obtain the approval of the appropriate unit committee and the signature of the chair and / or dean of the unit.

Note: Below you will find the necessary unit specific approvals:

  • School of Business and Economics (SOBE):
    • SOBE Curriculum Committee
    • Dean
  • Nursing and Health Professions:
    • Specific unit committee approval (Nursing, Allied Health, or Dental Education)
    • Dean
  • School of Education (SOE):
    • SOE Committee:
      • Initial (undergraduate) Committee
      • Advanced (graduate) Committee
    • Dean
  • Social Work: Changes are handled through IUPUI. Consult their webpage, and / or contact the Dean of Social Work.
  • School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA):
    • Subcommittee for specific area of study (criminal justice, political science, MPA concentrations, etc.)
    • Director
  • College of Arts and Sciences:
    • Department Committee Approval
    • Chair
    • COAS Curriculum Committee Approval
    • Dean
  • Next, the responsible party for the unit should:
    • Submit all paperwork to the Office of Academic Affairs to continue the review and approval process at the all-campus level.  Once the signature of the unit head (dean or director) has been obtained, Academic Affairs will route the form to the All-Campus Curriculum Committee.
  • Once the All-Campus Curriculum Committee has finished its review and approval process, the Chair of this committee will submit all paperwork to Dr Cynthia O’Dell in the Office of Academic Affairs. She will, then, alert the IU Academic Leadership Council of the courses on our Remonstrance List for the required 30-day remonstrance period. If there are no objections to the request, Dr. O’Dell will sign the form and submit it and all paperwork to the IU Office of the Registrar. She will also forward a copy of the memo to the All-Campus Curriculum Committee Chair and the dean or director (plus chair in the case of COAS).
