Program Highlights

The WGS Program offers a wide variety of courses in all areas of women’s and gender studies. Over 20 IUN faculty  from seven departments offer WGS courses on a regular basis and these courses take the perspectives of the social sciences, humanities, and diverse cultures.

The WGS Program hosts an annual student research conference, “Celebrating Our Students,” where students are encouraged to present their outstanding papers in a supportive, yet professional setting on campus. These students then have the opportunity to present their work at another IU inter- campus student research conference, exposing them to students and faculty from all of the IU campuses. Presenting in these venues gives students confidence to forge ahead in their academic lives, as well as provides them good experience to add to their resumes as they go looking for jobs or graduate school admission.

Career Opportunities

Since women comprise more than half of the world’s population, a Minor in WGS leads to an enhanced understanding of women’s issues in all walks of life. For instance, our students have gone on to achieve a Master’s Degree in Social Work, where they will be working with women regularly, while some have become Correctional Officers in women’s correctional facilities, and others have pursued a graduate degree in WGS to teach and conduct research at the college level.
