IU Printer Finder

With IU Printer Finder on your laptop, you can wirelessly connect and print to one of the Library printers or to the printer in the Hawthorn lobby while on campus. Just follow these simple instructions below. Want help? Visit the consultants located in the HH 108 Support Center or 1st floor Library Info Commons. For Laptop Computers with Windows 7, Vista, or XP

Step 1 for all wireless connections on campus is to install IU Secure

Getting and Installing IU Printer Finder

  1. Go to: http://iuware.iu.edu.
  2. If necessary, click the PC button above the Software list on the left. 
  3. In the Software categories list, select Network & Printing.  
  4. Select IU Printer Finder
  5. Click the Login for access button and login using your university username & passphrase.
  6. Click PrinterFinderInstaller.exe - 43.8 MB.
  7. Click the Save File button. The file is normally saved in your Downloads folder. 
  8. Locate your Downloads folder. Double-click the PrinterFinderInstaller.exe file to start the Installation wizard.
  9. In the Installation wizard box, click Install, Next, Install, Finish
  10. After installation, an IU Printer Finder shortcut appears on your Desktop.

Setting up the Hawthorn Lobby and Library Printers

  1. To launch PrinterFinder, double-click its desktop icon or select it on the Start menu.
  2. In the resulting dialog box, on the Browse tab, select:
    • Campus - Northwest
    • Building – Hawthorn Hall Lobby
    • Available Printer (s) – NW-Hawthorn-Lobby-P1
  3. Click Add Printer. Choose the Hawthorn P1 printer. Be patient. Installation may take a minute or two. 
  4. Repeat for each of the Library printers selecting Library for the Building and then NW-Library-Commons-P1NW-Library-Commons-P6 (2nd Floor),and NW-Library-Commons-P7 (3rd Floor). 
  5. Make sure none of the printers has been designated as your "default" printer. 
    • Go to your Start Menu
    • Select Devices and Printers on the right hand side.
    • Make sure none of the printers you setup has a green checkmark on it (indicates the default printer).

Printing from your laptop using RedHawk Print

  1. Select the appropriate printer for your location in your application's printer options.
  2. Navigate to http://bit.ly/redhawkprint.
  3. Login to RedHawk Print with your IU username and Passphrase.
  4. Review your charges.
  5. Click the checkbox in front of the document(s) you would like to print.
  6. Click Pay and Print and pick up your print job.
  7. Cancel any unnecessary remaining print jobs.

For Laptop Computers with Mac OS X

Step 1 for all wireless connections on campus is to install IU Secure

Note: You will not be able to complete these directions unless your Mac OS X account name is the same as your IU Network ID username. For details, see At IUB or IUPUI, using Mac OS X, how do I print from my personal computer to an RTC or STC printer?

Getting and Installing IU Printer Finder 

  1. Go to: http://iuware.iu.edu
  2. Select the Mac button above the Software list on the left.
  3. In the Software categories list, select Network & Printing.
  4. Select IU Printer Finder. Compatible with Mac OS X Leopard (10.5), Snow Leopard (10.6) or Lion (10.7), and Mountain Lion (10.8).
  5. Click the Login for access button and login using your university username & passphrase.
  6. To download, click IUPrinterFinder.zip - 0.1 MB. 
  7. A warning message appears saying your local username (name of your computer) must match your IU username. See Note at top of these directions.  If you are sure they match, click Open.

Setting up the Library Printers

  1. Open the IU Printer Finder file you downloaded. 
  2. From the pull-down menus, select: 
    • Campus - Northwest 
    • Building - Hawthorn Hall Lobby
    • Printers -  NW-Hawthorn-Lobby-P1. After you select it, information about the printer will show in the "Printer Description" box.
  3. Click Add Printer. (It will be added to your list of available printers in the Print & Scan System Preference pane. See Step 5.)
  4. Repeat for each of the Library printers selecting Library for the Building and then NW-Library-Commons-P1NW-Library-Commons-P6 (2nd Floor), and NW-Library-Commons-P7 (3rd Floor). 
  5. In most cases, the utility will automatically set the correct driver (PPD); however, if you need to specify the driver manually or otherwise adjust the driver's settings: 
    • From the Apple menu, select System Preferences
    • In the Hardware section, select the Print & Scan icon. 
    • Select one of the printers you added, and then click Options & Supplies
    • Click the Driver tab. 
    • For the Hawthorn Lobby printer, you should see "Generic Postscript Printer." Click the checkbox for "Duplex Printing Unit" and then OK.
    • For the Library printers, you should see "HP Laserject P4010 Series." Click the checkbox for "Duplex Unit" and then OK.
  6. The printers will now be available when you use RedHawk Print. 

Printing from your laptop using RedHawk Print

  1. Navigate to http://bit.ly/redhawkprint.
  2. Login to RedHawk Print with your IU username and Passphrase.
  3. Review your charges.
  4. Click the checkbox in front of the document(s) you would like to print.
  5. Click Pay and Print and pick up your print job. 
  6. Cancel any unnecessary remaining print jobs.
