What is an "exploratory student?"

An exploratory student is a student who is initially unsure about what they would like to pursue as a student at IU Northwest. The exploratory student wants to research and find out more about their personal interests, skills, and available resources that will help them find that perfect major available at IU Northwest.

Our office oversees two different exploratory tracks: one for the College of Arts and Sciences (COAS), and one for the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS).

Students entering IU Northwest as an exploratory student are required to do the following during their first year at IUN:

Fall Semester

  • Pre-Fall Semester (May 2017 - During Summer Orientation): Meet w/ Exploratory COAS Advisor John Strickland or Exploratory CHHS Advisor Veronica Williams to plan and register for Fall 2017 classes
  • Week 2-3: Meet w/ Exploratory COAS Advisor John Strickland or Exploratory CHHS Advisor Veronica Williams for beginning-of-semester check-in
  • Week 3-4: Meet with Career Services to discuss your initial major/career interests and take the FOCUS career assessment and/or Strong Interest Inventory.
  • Week 5-8: Meet w/ Exploratory COAS Advisor John Strickland or Exploratory CHHS Advisor Veronica Williams for mid-term check-in
  • Week of Oct. 30: Meet w/ Student Advising Center staff to plan courses for Spring 2018 semester
  • November 27-December 16: Meet w/ Exploratory COAS Advisor John Strickland or Exploratory CHHS Advisor Veronica Williams for end-term check-in

Spring Semester

  • Week 2-3: Meet w/ Exploratory COAS Advisor John Strickland or Exploratory CHHS Advisor Veronica Williams for beginning-of-semester check-in
  • Week 5-8: Meet w/ Exploratory COAS Advisor John Strickland or Exploratory CHHS Advisor Veronica Williams for mid-semester check-in
  • Week of Feb. 19: Attend Exploratory Students Workshop (Dates will be finalized and advertised during the Fall 2017 semester)
  • Week of March 26: Meet w/ Student Advising Center staff, or the advising staff for your newly-declared major, to plan and register for Fall 2018 courses
  • April 16-May 4: Meet w/ Exploratory COAS Advisor John Strickland or Exploratory CHHS Advisor Veronica Williams for end-of-semester check-in

Office of Career Services

The Student Advising Center works closely with the Office of Career Services to help our students research and decide on a major/career path that will benefit them. The Office of Career Services provides career development assistance to students and alumni for successful career planning, assessing skills & interests, obtaining gainful employment and continued educational goals.
