Mission Statement & Authority

Indiana University Northwest Police Department Mission Statement
The Indiana University Northwest Police Department is committed to protect the lives, property, and rights of all people, to maintain order, and to enforce the law impartially. We will provide the highest quality police services in partnership with the campus community. To fulfill our mission, we will strive to maintain the highest degree of ethical behavior, integrity, and professional conduct at all times.

Authority
University Police officers are empowered by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana.

(Acts 1971, P.L. 329, Sec.1; Acts 1975, P.L. 244, Sec. 2.)

The IU Northwest Campus Police Department employs sworn police officers. Our police officers are certified by the State of Indiana and meet state mandated training requirements. These officers have full police powers as granted by the State of Indiana (IC 21-39-4), and have access to national and state law enforcement computer networks. Officers maintain a 24 hour presence on the IU Northwest campus every day. IU police officers have jurisdiction on any real property owned or occupied by the University, including the streets passing through and adjacent to such property. Campus police also share concurrent jurisdiction with the City of Gary Police.

Campus police officers normally investigate all criminal offenses that occur in our jurisdiction. When necessary, campus police receive assistance from the City of Gary Police Department. Campus police personnel work closely with local, state and federal police agencies and have direct radio communication with the Indiana State Police, Lake County Police,  and the IU Police on the radio network.

Service Philosophy
As members of a student-centered campus, we make the commitment to provide friendly, knowledgeable customer service and assistance in support of the University's Shared Vision, Values, and Strategic Outcomes.
