EDUC-M 464 Methods of Teaching Content Area Literacy

Course Description  

This M464: Content Area Literacy online secondary teacher education course will help you design “active learning” strategies and techniques for supporting your students' ability to read, study, and learn from your subject area textbooks and other assigned readings, such as magazines, online journals, wikis, and blogs. You will learn to select, administer, guide, reinforce, and evaluate effective reading assignments for guiding ALL students' understanding of the content you want them to learn. Modifications of activities and alternative engagement activities will be emphasized in this course to assist students with reading and/or learning disabilities. All announcements, assignments, templates, modules, forums, and resources for learning in this course are found online in OnCourse.

Course Goals and Objectives  

Key instructional objectives for this online course include:

  • Determine the “readability” and “usability” of your content area text materials for supporting your students’ ability to study and learn your subject matter content.
  • Design and create “active learning” guides to support your students’ background and readiness for preparing to read your content area text materials.
  • Design and deliver a series of discussions questions that require your students to read your content materials closely, analyze what they have read, and make judgments about the ideas expressed by the text’s authors.

Course Activities  

Key course activities that you will complete in this online course to prepare yourself to support your students’ reading and studying your content material include:

  • Study Strategy Lesson. Create a mini-lesson for directly teaching your students great ways to study and remember what they are learning in your content area classroom. This teaching activity is worth 50 points of credit toward your grade in this course. 
  • Concept-Definition Map. Use the template provided to create a visual map to “actively engage” your students in seeing what a key concept in your subject area is (definition), is like (features), and looks like (examples). This guided activity is worth 50 points of credit toward your grade in this course.
  • Forums. Contribute and respond to five online Forums for sharing and collaborating with your classmates on course topics and assignment drafts to create effective teaching strategies and guidance. Each forum is worth 20 points, for a total of 100 points of credit in this course.
