High School artistry on exhibit at IU Northwest gallery

High School Biennial reception set for Feb. 24

Thursday Feb 18, 2016

Indiana University Northwest invites the campus and community to view the various works of art by 44 area high school students, on display now through March 11 in the Gallery for Contemporary Art.

The students, who represent 21 area high schools, were chosen by their respective art teachers to exhibit their work in the gallery, giving them a unique opportunity to show their pieces at the university level and giving their work broader exposure.

This year’s exhibiting schools include: 21st Century Charter of Gary, Andrean, Bishop Noll Institute, Boone Grove, Chesterton, Crown Point, George Rogers Clark, Griffith, Hanover Central, Hebron, Highland, Hobart, Lake Central, Lighthouse College Prep Charter School in Gary, Merrillville, Munster, Portage, River Forest, Valparaiso, Westside, and Wirt/Emerson.

A reception is planned in the gallery from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 24.

Ann Fritz, the gallery’s director, said the quality of the work submitted this year is “amazing.” Graphite, charcoal and pastel is the main medium this year, but there are also paintings, prints, photos, ceramic pieces, functional and sculptural pieces, and mixed media. For the first time, a welded sculpture is among the pieces, from a student at Merrillville High School.

The Gallery for Contemporary Art is located in the Savannah Center. Hours are Monday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
