Class Notes: December 2015

Alumna now owns CPA firm named a ‘Firm of the Future’

Tuesday Dec 08, 2015

Shelley Johnson, (Post-baccalaureate, Accounting, 1989) who grew up in the small central Indiana town of Russiaville, said she admired the certified public accountants that she knew while working in Merrillville. As successful managers and vice presidents in their firms, these colleagues inspired the Purdue University business and farm management graduate to also seek a CPA designation.

Working in Merrillville at the time, she went straight to IU Northwest to get prepared.

“The classes available through the post-baccalaureate program were exactly what I needed to eventually sit for the CPA exam,” she said. “The professors at IU Northwest were very good.  I felt my classes had a nice mix of textbook learning with good overview of real life scenarios. I felt the material prepared me well for the CPA exam.  Now that I own my own CPA firm, the post-bacc was an integral step.”

As evidence of Johnson’s career success, her firm, Allman Johnson CPAs, located in Indianapolis, was recently named a “Firm of the Future,” a nationally recognized honor by technology giant Intuit®.

As Johnson explains, “Firms of the Future have proven themselves as leaders in the accounting profession by adopting modern business models that include advanced cloud technologies, social media, branding, and online client platforms to better serve today’s tech-savvy client base.”
