Shields, an alumnus of IU Bloomington, earned his bachelor’s degree in education in 1958 and his master’s degree in education in 1967. He completed his doctoral education at Purdue University. He retired after 41 years of service to the Gary Community School Corporation where he worked in the field of special education.

Demonstrating his enduring commitment to the Gary community and students of IU Northwest, and in particular, students who are parents with financial need, Shields established an endowed scholarship for IU Northwest students in 2000, while also supporting many other endeavors and causes of IU Northwest.

In addition to being an active member of the Neal-Marshall Alumni Club of Northwest Indiana and the IUAA Lakeshore Chapter, Shields supported many causes and organizations, including serving as a founding member and Parliamentarian for the Gary Literacy Coalition, Inc., the National Council of Negro Women, the Gary Historical Society and the Urban League of Northwest Indiana. He served on the Clean-Up Committee under Councilman Roy Pratt.

“We will miss his dedication, spirit, and outspoken love for his Indiana University,” said Larry Alt, president of the IUAA Lakeshore Regional Chapter.

IU Northwest and IUSM-NW extend their deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of William A. Shields.
