Officer Amanda Earley, of the IUPD-NW was recently honored with the Gary Martin Award for Mental Attitude. The award signifies her extraordinary mental attitude throughout her 15 weeks of academy training with the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement (NILEA). The award is named for the late Gary Martin, who had served for many years as a professor in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs as well as served as Chief of Police for the Lake County Sheriff’s Department. The award has been bestowed upon a candidate during each NILEA graduation ceremony since the academy’s inception in 2006. Officer Earley is the first member of the IUPD-NW to be honored with this award.

Officer Rosemary Quinones, along with her colleague Officer Earley, also recently graduated from the NILEA, which provides in-service training programs to more than 1,800 police officers, offering in-service training classes and two 15-week basic recruit academy classes annually. The state of Indiana requires that all newly hired law enforcement candidates pass this 15-week, 600-hour training course.

Officers of the IUPD-NW were special guests at the 5th District Chili ‘N Chat Community Forum in Gary. At the forum, Councilwoman Kimberly Robinson highlighted the community engagement efforts of the IUPD-NW, represented at the forum by Chief Patricia Nowak, Chief Wayne James, Sgt. Melvin Blakely, Officer Brandon Campbell, and Officer Clifford Caldwell.

Joseph Pellicciotti, Vice Chancellor of Administration and SPEA Professor, has been selected by Indiana State Bar Association (ISBA) president, James Dimos, as co-chair of the ISBA Written Publications Committee. The Written Publications Committee reviews and approves all articles on professional subjects prior to publication in the Association’s journal. The committee also oversees the annual Harrison Legal Writing Awards competition.

Jeri Pat Gabbert, Vice Chancellor for University Advancement and External Affairs, recently presented a webinar, “Make the Ask! The Fundamentals of an Effective Solicitation,” for the Association of Lutheran Development Executives (ALDE). She also made the same presentation at the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Conference in January.
