Recent accomplishments of IU Northwest alumni

Vickie Casanova (PBC, Urban Studies and Community Development, 2012) recently returned from Kingston, Jamaica, where she performed at an Arts and Education Conference at Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts for the second consecutive year. Casanova also had an article published in the Jamaican peer-reviewed journal, “Jonkonnu,” the first international journal of its kind recently launched by the college.

Kelly Jackson (M.S., Social Work, 2006) and Jennifer Cowger (M.S., Social Work, 2008) were recently honored by the Indiana Small Business Development Center (ISBDC). The pair are co-owners of the business North Star Services, LLC, a social service agency that provides key services for abused and neglected children as well as at-risk families. At the 22nd Annual Entrepreneurial Excellence Awards, their business was named as the Emerging Small Business of the Year.

Mike Krutz (M.S., Secondary Education, 1994) has been principal of Merrillville High School for the past 9 years. He was recently honored by Indiana Association of School Principals as the 2013 District 1 High School Principal.

Elizabeth Krutz (M.S., Elementary Education ,1998) is principal at Central Elementary School in Valparaiso. Her school recently received the Outstanding Successful School award at the 66th Annual Association of Teacher Educators – Indiana Conference, nominated for its partnership with Valparaiso University’s Study Buddy Tutoring Program.

Don Bales (M.S., Secondary Education, 1979) has been selected as one of five inductees in the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association’s Hall of Fame class for 2013. Bales recently retired from Lowell High School after serving 36 years.

Dan Kenning (M.S., Secondary Education, 2007) was recently presented with the 2013 Cooperating Teacher Award from the Indiana Division of the Association of Teacher Educators.

Theresa Valade (MBA, 2007) has joined the Chicago Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Board of Directors as the Chair of Education for the HR Development Committee. She is a recent recipient of the 2013 Up and Coming Influential Women of Northwest Indiana award. Her company, Success Trek, has earned awards.
