  • History of Jazz

    Jazz spans a period of over 100 years and encompasses a range of music from ragtime to the present day.  This course will explore the history of jazz and will provide an insightful overview of the different eras of jazz.  Each class session will examine a different jazz style period including Early Jazz/New Orleans, Swing/Big Band, Bop, Cool Jazz, Hard Bop, Free Jazz and more. 

    This course will be led by jazz legend and Gary native, Mr. Billy Foster.  Mr. Foster is a respected pianist, composer, educator, producer and host of the "Billy Foster Jazz Zone."   As an active professional musician for the past 35 years, Mr. Foster has performed across the U.S. with others, as well as with his own groups.  He has written and produced recordings with both “Billy Foster and Audio” and the “Billy Foster Trio.”  He is a featured soloist on two of guitarist Henry Johnson’s CDs on MCA Records.

    Day:  Wednesday evenings
    Times:  5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
    Details: The duration of the course will be a total of 12 hours.  Classes will be held on the campus of IU Northwest on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.  

  • Line Dancing

    This fun, interactive and engaging class enhances growth and personal enrichment and develops stronger bodies.  Line Dancing combines exercise and dance and teaches the students to keep their choreography in sync. The dances will be demonstrated by the instructor and taught until everyone learns the correct steps.  Then, as a whole, the class will execute the moves to the music.  Participants will have fun, socialize, and enjoy one another – all while getting a great workout!

    Dates:  March 4th - April 22, 2017 
    Day:  Saturday mornings
    Times:  11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
    Details:  The duration of the class will be a total of 16 hours.  Classes will be held on the campus of IU Northwest on Saturday mornings from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
