Frequently Asked Questions

How do I forward my iun.edu mail to a different account?

How do new employees get an account?

How do new students get an account?

How do I change or synchronize my passphrase?

To change your passphrase (after you have already established your account):

  • Go to the Passphrase Maintenance Page to change your passphrases. Save yourself some time and read the passphrase requirements first. The system will check to make sure your passphrase meets all stated guidelines.

How do I change the passphrase for my Professional Web Account on Webserve?

  • It must be changed directly in Webserve.
  • You must use a secured telnet client to change your Professional web account passphrase.
  • Login to your Webserve account using your current Webserve account passphrase.
    • At the prompt type passwd . To continue follow the online directions. This command only changes your passphrase on Webserve.
    • Type quit to exit the system.

How do I access Oncourse?

  • Oncourse uses the same username and passphrase as your IU Northwest e-mail account.
  • Creating your Technology accounts establishes both your e-mail account and Oncourse access.
  • If you can login to your e-mail account, but not login to Oncourse, you need to synchronize your passphrases.

What is the maximum size on an e-mail message (including attachments)?

Users of the Shakespeare system (student or website accounts) can receive an e-mail message to 7.6MB. If a message that is over that size is sent to a Shakespeare system account, the sender will receive a non-delivery notice that says "Message size exceeds fixed maximum message size".

Users of Exchange system (faculty or staff) will not get this error since Exchange doesn't have a message size limit.

In most cases an e-mail message over 7.6 MB has a large attachment. Suggestion:

  • Save your attachment on your personal or professional web account.
  • Give the complete URL to the person for the file on your website.
    • Please note: If a file has the following extensions, just giving the file name will allow the person to download that file for the following extension: .doc .wpd .zip

It is suggested you create the document, ftp it to the web, then in a web browser, type the name of the file and press enter. This way you can be sure you are have a correct URL to paste into an e-mail. Paste the browser's URL into your e-mail to send. This makes the e-mail small and still allows the person to download the file.

Example: Here is a sample document created and saved on the web. When someone clicks on the link in their e-mail, the file with either open (where they can save it) or ask where you want to save the file (as in the zip example).

Is there a "vacation" or "out of office" option for email?

Several people have requested instructions for a "vacation" option for their iun.edu email. This option is used to notify your senders that you are "away" with a message of your choice. This option does not stop mail messages from coming into your account!

Below are instructions from IU's Knowledge Base on how to set up the vacation option.
