IU Northwest displays ‘Free at Last’ exhibit throughout February

Visitors will learn the history behind the journey to abolish slavery

Throughout February, visitors to the Savannah Center lobby at Indiana University Northwest will be able to view a history lesson about the abolition of slavery and learn more about the contributions of influential figures of the time.

“Free at Last: A History of the Abolition of Slavery in America,” traces the history of the movement to abolish slavery from the framing of the constitution to its abolition during the Civil War. It illuminates shades of opinion within the ranks of the famous and ordinary, free and slave, men and women, who came to see slavery as incompatible with the ideals upon which the nation was founded.

The exhibit was obtained through The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, a non-profit organization founded in New York in 1994 that supports the study and love of American history through a wide range of programs throughout the nation.

The free exhibit, sponsored by the IU Northwest Office of Multicultural Affairs and Student Life and Athletics, will come to a close on Wednesday, Feb. 29.

The Savannah Center is located at the southeast corner of the main campus parking lot at 33rd Avenue and Broadway in Gary.
