High School artistry on exhibit at IU Northwest gallery

Reception and awards scheduled for Jan. 27

Indiana University Northwest invites the campus and community to view the various works of art by 37 area high school students, currently on display in the Gallery for Contemporary Art.

The students, who represent 20 area high schools, were chosen by their respective art teachers to exhibit their work in the gallery, giving them a unique opportunity to show their pieces at the university level and giving their work broader exposure.

A reception is planned in the gallery from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 27. A nationally renowned painter, Valerie Taglieri, has judged the students’ work and will award her top three favorites and two honorable mentions with monetary awards at the reception.

The awards are courtesy of six sponsors, including Big Concrete and Excavating; Strack and Van Til; Indiana Harbor Belt; Thrivent Financial; Bruce and Mary Leep; and Hammond Machine Works, Inc.

Ann Fritz, the gallery’s director, has been hosting the High School Biennial since 1999. She commended the area high school art teachers for fostering their students’ creative endeavors that will serve them well in any discipline, not just art.

The exhibit runs through Friday, Feb. 3.

The IU Northwest Gallery for Contemporary Art is open to the public Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The mission of the IU Northwest Gallery for Contemporary Art is to present an innovative exhibition program that complements and enhances the university’s academic offerings. Exhibit art collections are for study and research, and are also meant to educate the university community and general public about the forms and issues of contemporary and historic art from all cultures.

The IU Northwest Gallery for Contemporary Art is located in the Savannah Center neighboring the IU Northwest Book Store.
