IU Northwest recognizes faculty and staff’s significant campus contributions

Luncheon honors outstanding faculty and staff for accomplishments, years of service

On a rainy April afternoon, more than 100 IU Northwest faculty and staff brought sunshine to a luncheon honoring the contributions of three outstanding faculty and four outstanding staff members. The annual luncheon, hosted by the Office of Human Resources/Payroll, also recognized nearly 60 employees for their years of service and dedication to the Northwest campus.

David Malik, Ph.D., Executive Vice Chancellor, opened the Years of Service and Outstanding Employee Awards Luncheon by recognizing the achievements of three outstanding faculty members.

George Bodmer, Ph.D., Chair and Department of English Professor, was presented with the Distinguished Service Award.

Bodmer has been co-editor of the Lion and the Unicorn, a prominent English journal focused on children’s literature, for six years; chair of the English department since 2001; and has served multiple terms as Faculty Organization president. While on sabbatical, he co-chaired the Installation Planning Committee for Chancellor William J. Lowe. 

The Founder’s Day Teaching Award was presented to Tanice Foltz, Ph.D., Director of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology.

Foltz has taught at IU Northwest since 1989, and has been widely recognized for teaching excellence as a member of FACET (Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching); the IU system Teaching Academy; and recipient of a number of Trustee Teaching Awards. Foltz proudly accepted the prestigious award by acknowledging that she was grateful to finally be a recipient after being nominated at least 12 different times.

Neil Goodman, Professor of Fine Arts, and sculptor of the Northwest campus’s Shadows and Echoes Sculpture Garden, was awarded with the Distinguished Scholarship/Creative Activity Award.

Goodman, who was traveling in Peru and did not attend the luncheon, was chosen as this year’s recipient due to his dedication to his discipline and the university. He has taught at IU Northwest since 1979. Goodman’s works of art reside in corporate offices and organizations around the country, as well as in major public commissioned sculptures located in and around Chicago.

Chancellor Lowe, attending his first Outstanding Employee luncheon, presented awards to the IU Northwest Outstanding Staff Winners.

The first award was presented to Karen Downing, Program Assistant for the School of Education. Downing was the recipient of the Outstanding Clerical Staff Award.

Downing joined the campus in July 2006, and her colleagues agree that the same level of energy, dedication and sense of excellence that she brought with her on her first day has remained evident over the years.

John Pappas, Chief Program Analyst, was awarded with the Outstanding Professional Staff Award.

His colleagues noted that, over the 24 years he’s been at IU Northwest, Pappas’s programming has touched nearly all facets of the campus. He is responsible for writing the programs for the campus’s event scheduler, campus calendar, Student Government Voting Systems, the Find People application, and the Placement Exam schedule, among others.

The Outstanding Technical Staff Award was presented to Larry Hayden, Micro Computer Technician II.

Hayden’s colleagues recognized him for his professional and dependable manner, all while assisting the campus with a smile on his face. Colleagues agree that he exhibits great leadership skills, has sound judgment, and is always willing to take responsibility for his decisions.

The final note of recognition was presented to Ella Morgan, Custodial Worker, for the Outstanding Service/Maintenance Staff Award.

One colleague said that, after working with Morgan for almost two decades, her commitment to keeping the facilities at IU Northwest clean has not wavered, and her perseverance and dedication to getting the job done right were noted.

Employees who have dedicated multiple years of service were also recognized during the luncheon. With a combined 855 years of service, 58 employees were called forward.
