Favorite Web Sites: News/Current Events
The web sites featured this month have been critically evaluated
and selected by the IU Northwest librarians as well as a group of academic
and public librarians across the United States who compile a yearly Best
Free Reference Web Sites List for the American
Library Association. Here is a list of selection
criteria initially created by the MARS Best Free Websites Task
Force to choose these sites. The Library hopes our readers will
find these web sites useful for locating reliable, accurate and
authoritative information on the Internet.
AJR Newslink provides "18,000 links to newspapers, magazines, broadcasters
and news services worldwide." This joint venture of American Journalism
Review and NewsLink Associates which was recently made into two separate
sites has a section called "Digital Feed" (which includes online-only columns
by new-media experts and original content of special interest to readers
of online news) and a section titled "Bylines" (to update the journalism
community on personnel changes.) This site is a must for journalists, news
junkies, communication students, reference librarians and those who simply
want to stay in touch through their hometown newspaper. The very comprehensive "Resources" section
includes links to journalism organizations, publishers and academic resources,
new-media newsletters, media reports and marketing research, WWW Search
tools, and starting points for journalists including broadcasting and photojournalism.
This is an impressive gateway site to everything related to journalism.(Summary

to selected online magazines arranged under broad subject. According to its creators, "this
non-profit and non-partisan web site was initiated by the group of freelance
journalists to provide our colleagues as well as readers worldwide with reliable
information about international news sources," a key goal being to provide access
to current resources around the world not included in similar sites. Online
newspapers are listed by country under region. Annotated lists of selected
