ABI/Inform Returns as a Full-Text Journal Index

The IU Northwest Library recently subscribed to ABI/Inform Global, the online version of the very popular business journal index. This web resource provides in-depth coverage of business trends, conditions, corporate strategies, management techniques and specific company and product information. It has indexing and abstracts to more than 1,000 business and management periodicals including over 350 international English language titles all dating prior to 1986. ABI/Global in particular covers more than 1,300 sources with over 600 journals available in complete full-text format.

To access ABI/Inform Global from IU Northwest campus computers ONLY, go to http://www.umi.com/pqdauto ( NOTE: Sometimes when connecting to ABI/Inform from on campus, the web site will ask for a user ID and password. If this happens, type ipauto in both the user id and password boxes.) The main menu offers the user three types of search options for retrieving journal articles:

  1.   Basic Search
  2.   Advanced Search
  3.    Natural Language Search

Each type of search provides a detailed text and graphical instruction screen by clicking the Help button located at the far right side of the screen. For simple instructional purposes, this article will concentrate on performing a Basic Search.

To do a Basic Search:

  • Type in specific keywords in the dialog box.
  •  Searches can be limited by date by clicking on the pull-down menu and selecting a specific date range. Note: The database automatically defaults to the current year ( i.e. 1999 to present).
  •  Users can also limit inquires to full-text articles or peer reviewed journals. When specific limiters have been chosen for a search topic, click the Search button to perform the search.
  •  At the next screen, the journal articles retrieved by the search will be displayed. To the left of each record, symbols for citation and abstract, full-text or page image in Adobe Acrobat(r) format will appear if that record is available in those formats. To view a specific record, click the highlighted blue link or format symbol(s).
  • At the next screen, the article can be printed or e-mailed by selecting the appropriate box located at the left of the screen. Both the E-mail article and the Print article options give detailed instructions how to print or e-mail a specific journal article. Off Campus Access to the Ruth Lilly (Ovid) Medical Databases Has Changed

Off campus access to the Ruth Lilly Library Medical databases (e.g. CINAHL, Medline, etc) provided by the IU Northwest Library now REQUIRES a valid IU Northwest e-mail address and password. To obtain a new IU Northwest e-mail account, go to the IU Northwest Campus Web Page and click on the E-mail Information  link directly below the revolving gold key icon. If you experience any difficulty obtaining or using your IU Northwest student, staff or faculty e-mail account, please call the IU Northwest Help Desk at 219-981-HELP for further assistance.

To use the Ruth Lilly Medical Database System from home:

  1. At the IU Northwest Library Web Site, go to the Electronic Information Page  and choose the Connecting from Off Campus  link.
  2.  From this database list, click Ruth Lilly Medical library Ovid Database System.
  3. At the next screen, type your username and password in the boxes provided. Then click the Submit Query button to search the database. If you need any assistance using this database, contact , Library News Web Editor or the Reference Desk at 219-980-6582.

The IU Northwest Library strongly urges students to obtain an IU Northwest e-mail account to access the Ovid and any other off-campus databases from home that may require a user ID and password. Remember: The Ovid database is also available from IU Northwest campus computers through the Library's Connecting from On Campus Page.

Project Muse Brings Full-Text Online Access to Over 125 Arts and Humanities Journals

Project Muse was created in 1995 through a joint partnership of Johns Hopkins University Press and the Milton S. Eisenhower Library to offer full-text worldwide Internet access to scholarly journals in the humanities, social sciences and mathematics. The IU Northwest Library recently started a subscription to Project Muse's Arts and Humanities Collection which consists of 126 full-text journals from 1993 to the present. Some titles in this collection include American Literature, Journal of Social History, Journal of Women's History, Victorian Studies, MLN (Modern Language Notes and Theatre Journal. To access the Project Muse database from IU Northwest campus computers ONLY, go to  http://muse.jhu.edu

  • At the main menu, choose Search to retrieve full-text journal articles.
  • At the Basic Search screen, keywords can be entered in the box provided and be searched within particular sections by a pull-down menu to the right of the Search Terms area.
  • Articles can also be located by author and be sorted by date, title or relevancy rank.
  • After all necessary data has been entered, click the Search button to retrieve full-text articles by a particular topic or author.
  • This database also provides a Help  link that gives detailed links to performing an advanced search as well as general search techniques and strategies.
  • The next screen lists the number of journal titles retrieved. To view a journal article, click the View this Document link below the citation.
  • To print the journal article, click the Print icon at the top of the web browser ( e.g. Internet Explorer or Netscape). The article can also be viewed and printed in Adobe Acrobat(r) format by selecting the Access Article in PDF link at the top of the full-text article.
