PsycINFO Now Accessible from IU Northwest Library Online Catalog Workstations

The wait is over! PsycINFO, the web version of PsychLit is now available on two designated online catalog workstations in the IU Northwest Library Reference Department. Produced by the American Psychological Association, PsycINFO includes over 1.5 million records for research and practical literature in psychology and related fields such as medicine, psychiatry and social work. The database contains indexes to journal articles, book chapters, technical reports and dissertations from 1887 to the present.

To access the PsycINFO from the IU Northwest Library online catalog workstations, click the PsycINFO link on the workstation's main menu.  To search the database from other IU Northwest campus computers ONLY, go to the IU Northwest Library Home Page's Electronic Information Page and select Connecting from On Campus.   From the next screen, choose PsycINFO.

  • Once connected to the database, check the specific year(s) you wish to search. Then click the Open Selected Databases button.
  • The database's main search allows you to perform a basic keyword search by simply typing terms in the Find dialog box. More specific searches can be done by selecting the Index and Thesaurus buttons.
  • For more extensive information about how to search PsycINFO, consult the Help section offered by the database. Paper copies of this handout can be obtained at the Reference Desk.

 American Chemical Society's Web Site Offers Access to Its Electronic Journals

The IU Northwest Library recently subscribed to the American Chemical Society's (ACS) electronic journal web service to support the campus' chemistry curriculum and research needs. This web resource features 26 fully interactive ACS journals that provide unlimited access to the journals' full-text, illustrations, figures and supporting information. Users can also access the electronic archive of all journals from January 1996 to the present. Some titles included in electronic format are: Biochemistry, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Environmental Science and Technology and The Journal of Organic Chemistry. More importantly, the most recently published issues are available sooner than the print edition. For more general information on this service, go to: http://pubs.acs.org/journals/faqgen.html.

These electronic journals can only be viewed from IU Northwest campus computers. To use this web site, go to the ACS Electronic Journals Web Page at http://pubs.acs.org

  1. From the sites's main menu, choose Journals and Magazines on the left side of the screen if you wish to go directly to any of the available electronic journals.
  2. To search for a specific topic or journal, click Search for Journals at the top of the main menu screen.
  3. At the next screen, you can perform a keyword search for a title or author in all journals or a specific one by selecting the ACS Articles on Command Free Search.
  4. The second option provided to subscribers is full-text searching of ACS journals. A user can select a specific from the drop-down menu and type in keywords in Find dialog boxes to locate an article by using free text searching or by title, author and abstract fields as well as limiting the search to a specific year.
  5. For more detailed searching techniques, the database provides a Help on Searching link at the top of each search form.

Instructions For Printing IUCAT Screens Now Included on the IU Northwest Library Web Page

Having problems printing screens from IUCAT, the IU Libraries online catalog? Here are basic instructions for printing information from IUCAT from campus computers with a telnet connection. Directions given are only for the two standard telnet software packages used at the IU Northwest campus.

Basic Microsoft Telnet Package

  1. With the left mouse button, highlight the text you wish to print.
  2. Click the Edit button at the top of the screen and choose Copy.
  3. Then bring up the Notepad or Wordpad program on your computer. Click Edit at the top of the screen and select Paste. The highlighted information should appear on the screen.
  4. To print the information, click File and choose Print.

TCP 3270 for Windows 95 (McGill Telnet Package)

  1. To print a particular IUCAT screen, simply click the printer icon at the top of the screen.
