MLA Bibliography Now Available From Home
IU Northwest students, faculty and staff can now reach MLA Bibliography from
home via a Telnet connection on the World Wide Web. MLA Bibliography which
is published by the Modern Language Association of America indexes critical
research sources on modern language, literature, linguistics and folklore.
Covering literary and language scholarly publications from 1963 to the
present, it provides access to over 3,000 journals, international series,
monographs, working papers, proceedings and bibliographies.
It also offers easy access to a wide array of subjects, from the novels
of Jane Austen and Dorothy Allison to the poetry of Nikki Giovanni and
Maya Angelou as well as literary genres and forms, national literature
and regional dialects.
To use MLA Bibliography from home:
- At the IU Northwest Library Home Page, go to the Electronic
Information Page and choose the Connecting
from off campus link.
- From this database list, click MLA International Bibliography. Note: This
connection requires Telnet software. Since the Telnet software included
with most Windows 95 computers sometimes doesn't display or print IO
database screens correctly, we recommend downloading Telnet software
from the Tucows web site.
- After typing your Student ID or Social Security Number at the login
prompt, an Infogate main menu will appear.
- Select menu option 4, Indexes to Journal and Newspaper Articles at
the prompt.
- At the next menu, choose the line number for MLA Bibliography and
press Enter. Then select Connect to MLA Bibliography at the
next screen to search the database. If you need any assistance using

Remember: MLA Bibliography's web-based version is also available from
IU Northwest
campus computers using a Web-based interface through the library's Connecting
from on campus page.
Use PEAK to Obtain Full-Text Social
Science and Science Electronic Journal Articles
PEAK (Pricing Electronic Access to Knowledge) is a temporary experimental
service for electronic journal delivery and pricing research. Available through
August 1999, this service sponsored by the University of Michigan offers access
to over 1100 full-text journals published by Elsevier Science from 1996 to
the present. These journals feature the leading research in the life, physical
and social sciences.
All IU faculty, students and staff have access to these online journals from
home or campus computers once they become registered users. IU Northwest students, faculty
and staff can become authorized PEAK users by sending their Social Security
or Student ID Number, full e-mail address (e.g. yourname@iun.edu), and campus
status (faculty, staff or student) to

InULA Sponsors Workshop Developing Performance
Standards for Academic Reference Librarians on April 23
The Indiana University Librarians Association (InULA) is sponsoring a Professional
Development workshop entitled Developing Performance Standards for Academic
Reference Librarians. It will be presented by Lila Fredenburg, IU Libraries'
Human Resources Officer. Attendees who would gain the most from this workshop
would be academic librarians whose responsibilities include a major portion
of time spent in reference work. Nevertheless, skills concepts and methods
for developing performance standards would also appeal to librarians in other
areas such as library instruction and even technical services.
The workshop will be held at Indiana University South Bend in Northside Hall,
Room 135 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. A box lunch and refreshments will be provided.
This program costs $10.00 for non-InULA members and is free to InULA members.
Librarians from all Indiana academic libraries are encouraged to attend. Workshop
attendance is limited to 25 people. Registration deadline is April 1st. To
register for the workshop, print out and complete the information form then
